Gear Materials, Properties, and Manufacture

All of the critical technical aspects of gear materials technology are addressed in this new reference work. Gear Materials, Properties, and Manufacture is intended for gear metallurgists and materials specialists, manufacturing engineers, lubrication technologists, and analysts concerned with gear failures who seek a better understanding of gear performance and gear life. This volume complements other gear texts that emphasize the design, geometry, and theory of gears. The coverage begins with an overview of the various types of gears used, important gear terminology, applied stresses and strength requirements associated with gears, and lubrication and wear. This is followed by in-depth treatment of metallic (ferrous and nonferrous alloys) and plastic gear materials. Emphasis is on the properties of carburized steels, the material of choice for high-performance power transmission gearing.

Carburizing

Annotation Based on his training in metallurgy and experience in a large British gear manufacturing company, Parrish reviews the microstructural features of metal products that have been carbon case-hardened, and the influence of those features on the more important material properties. He is not concerned with the carbonizing process at all. He primarily addresses students of engineering and ferrous metallurgy, but also stress and design engineers who might want to understand more fully the specifications of the materials they are considering for their designs. He wrote the eight articles to summarize the field's literature of the early 1970s for his own convenience, but at invitation, published them as a series in the Heat Treatment of Metals during 1967-77, and collected them for a first edition of the volume in 1980. Mechanical Design of Machine Elements and Machines

Taking a failure prevention perspective, this book provides engineers with a balance between analysis and design. The new edition presents a more thorough treatment of stress analysis and fatigue. It integrates the use of computer tools to provide a more current view of the field. Photos or images are included next to descriptions of the types and uses of common materials. The book has been updated with the most comprehensive coverage of possible failure modes and how to design with each in mind. Engineers will also benefit from the consistent approach to problem solving that will help them apply the material on the job.

Design Practices

Since the mid-20th Century, automatic transmissions have benefited drivers by automatically changing gear ratios, freeing the driver from having to shift gears manually. The automatic transmission's primary job is to allow the engine to operate in its speed range while providing a wide range of output (vehicle) speeds automatically. The transmission uses gears to make more effective use of the engine's torque and to keep the engine operating at an appropriate speed. For nearly half a century, Design Practices: Passenger Car Automatic Transmissions has been the “go-to” handbook of design considerations for automatic transmission industry engineers of all levels of experience. This latest ...

This book introduces the subject of total design, and introduces the design and selection of various common mechanical engineering components and machine elements. These provide "building blocks", with which the engineer can practice his or her art. The approach adopted for defining design follows that developed by the SEED (Sharing Experience in Engineering Design) programme where design is viewed as "the total activity necessary to provide a product or process to meet a market need." Within this framework the book concentrates on developing detailed mechanical design skills in the areas of bearings, shafts, gears, seals, belt and chain drives, clutches and brakes, springs and fasteners. Wh...

Mechanical Design of Machine Components

Analyze and Solve Real-World Machine Design Problems Using SI Units Mechanical Design of Machine Components, Second Edition: SI Version strikes a balance between method and theory, and fills a void in the world of design. Relevant to mechanical and related engineering curricula, the book is useful in college classes, and also serves as a reference for practicing engineers. This book combines the needed engineering mechanics concepts, analysis of various machine elements, design procedures, and the application of numerical and computational tools. It demonstrates the means by which loads are resisted in mechanical components, solves all examples and problems within the book using SI units, an...
