Lightning from the Depths

If a people Have no poets And no poetry of their own For a National Anthology Then treachery and barking Will do the trick With these words, a challenge is laid down in this new volume of Albanian poetry. Albania, however, has a dynamic tradition of literature. Lightning from the Depths is the first English collection to present the full range of Albanian verse. Albanian literature has had many lives. The early Christian traditions disappeared as Islam and the Ottoman Empire took over. Muslim literature, too, withered when the nation strove to become an independent European country. The beginnings of a modern tradition were quashed by the Stalinists. All along this rocky path, poets have turned the political strife, poverty, and isolation their nation has often experienced into culture, both celebrating and questioning the society in which they live. Lightning from the Depths opens readers’ eyes to a new political and cultural world populated artists who can spin despair into poetry.

Between(s) and Beyond(s) in Contemporary Albanian Literature

This book focuses on contemporary Albanian poetry, given the important role it has continuously played in Albanian literature as a whole. It analyses particular literary periods and their representative poets from a comparative perspective. It raises meaningful questions that point to particularly interesting features of Albanian literature that call for in-depth study, taking into account research conducted in this field over the years by both Albanian and foreign scholars. However, this book’s focus on comparative literature and the perspectives that this academic practice offers for so-called small, marginal literatures in the realm of European literatures allows for a different and uni...

The New Condemned

The New Condemned

The New Condemned: Contemporary Albanian Poetry in English is a selection of poets writing beyond the 1990's. This selection includes works by established and minor poets whose voices represent contemporary strains in Albanian poetry. As parts of Europe move toward far-right wing nativism and isolationism, this anthology seeks to inform the poetry community of the spirit of an established people with a long standing tradition in letters. In The New Condemned: Contemporary Albanian Poetry in English you will find quality translations of poetry that are uncompromisingly beautiful and heroic. By nature, poets are exiles as they seek the truth in private quarters. As such, Albanian poets face a curious predicament having been condemned by history to isolation from much of the English speaking world. Ismail Kadare is one of the few whose work reaches a larger English audience. In this volume, we seek to bolster the voices of others in the English speaking world.

Albanian Tattoo

Sami Milloshis newest collection of poetry, Albanian Tattoo, is an emotional exploration of some of the collateral damage of emigration unaccounted for by a shallow assumption of hope in an American Dream. Milloshis work presents a linguists playground, with fascinating discourse patterns, at once cajoling and poignant, cleverly interspersed with sharp musings and hidden metaphors. Milloshis second book of poetry not written in his native tongue, Albanian Tattoo examines the themes of homesickness, hope, and love of family and freedom. The use of his newly learned language to express his observations and his essence is surprising and innovative, even as the subject matter turns bitter. He reflects on his personal struggles and how they have deepened his thoughts about the values of life, making love and freedom sacred to him. I Saw My River I saw my river it flooded lands, dreams, houses, wedding parties, deaths, kisses, and all ached in my heart. I saw my river calming down songs and roses had no thirst expecting the caress of this waters to come they bloomed in my soul. My river is not a woman without womb, I know the source from which it flows!

The Kosovo Albanian poet, Ali Podrimja (1942-2012), is considered by many to be the most typical representative of modern Albanian verse in Kosovo and is certainly the Kosovo poet with the widest international reputation. His verse is compact in structure, and his imagery is direct, terse and devoid of any artificial verbosity. Every word counts. The present selection of verse is designed to provide the reader with an overview of the poetic evolution of Ali Podrimja. It touches upon the early years of dynamic optimism in the 1960s, visits the haunts of anguish and personal solitude in the 1970s and 1980s, and brings the reader inevitably to the apocalyptic 1990s in Kosovo during which the recusant voice of the poet was more indispensable than ever.
