Women and Personal Property in the Victorian Novel

How key changes to the married women's property laws contributed to new ways of viewing women in society are revealed in Deborah Wynne's study of literary representations of women and portable property during the period 1850 to 1900. While critical explorations of Victorian women's connections to the material world have tended to focus on their relationships to commodity culture, Wynne argues that modern paradigms of consumerism cannot be applied across the board to the Victorian period. Until the passing of the 1882 Married Women's Property Act, many women lacked full property rights; evidence suggests that, for women, objects often functioned not as disposable consumer products but as cher...

All Equally Real: Femininities and Masculinities Today

This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2014. This volume is a collection of research papers which deem gender identities to be dynamic and multiple categories, refusing resolutely to reduce their complexity to fit neat extant binaries. It attempts to grapple with the dialectic which emerges from the fact that while there is a certain resistance to being labeled in contemporary discourses on sexuality, gender identities actively influence how we interpret the world and how we function within it: we exist amongst patterns, models, and behaviours, as well as among people who virtually demand to be labeled, because to them, this forms the basis of a stable identity. Various cultural perspectives and realities are here given voice, bringing to bear upon the reader the need to identify privileges they might take for granted, but which are unobtainable elsewhere. As the curtain of one’s own cultural context is lifted, this volume hopes that these privileges are – even if for a moment – no longer invisible.

CanLit Across Media

The materials we turn to for the construction of our literary pasts - the texts, performances, and discussions selected for storage and cataloguing in archives - shape what we know and teach about literature today. The ways in which archival materials have been structured into forms of preservation, in turn, impact their transference and transformation into new forms of presentation and re-presentation. Exploring the production of culture through and outside of the archives that preserve and produce CanLit as an entity, CanLit Across Media asserts that CanLit arises from acts of archival, critical, and creative analysis. Each chapter investigates, challenges, and provokes this premise by exa...

Naming the Father

Naming the Father is a collection of essays on the subject of fatherhood: its enduring power, its secret ruses, its unsettling provocations. Despite the considerable critical attention devoted to motherhood in literature-and despite the late-twentieth-century focus on patriarchy-there is surprisingly no comparable collection on fatherhood. This volume was born of the conclusion that critics of modern and contemporary literature may comprehend the father too little for presuming to have comprehended patriarchy so much. Naming the Father begins with a series of nonfiction essays that attempts to locate the missing father in the individual experiences of three scholars at various stages of thei...
