From the early modern period to the 20th century, the multifaceted capital of houses linked individuals, families and societies in specific ways. The essays collected here probe the material texture of past societies concerning the inheritance, value, sale or maintenance of houses as well as the symbolic meanings that houses conveyed.

Die Beiträge des Bandes beschäftigen sich im Schwerpunkt mit dem Ersten Weltkrieg aus der Gender-Perspektive, wobei das komplexe Verhältnis zwischen Front und Heimatfront ebenso thematisiert wird wie die Erfahrungen von Gewalt, die Formen der Visualisierung und Literarisierung des Ersten Weltkrieges sowie die Auswirkungen des Krieges auf Konzepte von Soldatentum und Bürgertum. Ergänzt wird dieser Schwerpunkt durch die von William D. Erhart besorgte Edition eines Erinnerungsberichtes eines US-Bomber-Piloten des Zweiten Weltkrieges sowie einen Essay von Franz Karl Stanzel zum Zusammenhang zwischen »Nemesis« und dem Untergang von Schlachtkreuzern im Zweiten Weltkrieg.
Houses, Secrets, and the Closet
»Houses, Secrets, and the Closet« investigates the literary production of masculinities and their relation to secrets and sexualities in 18th and 19th century fiction. It focusses on close readings of Gothic fiction, Sensation Novels, and tales by Horace Walpole, Ann Radcliffe, William Godwin, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Wilkie Collins, and Henry James. The study approaches these texts through the lens of domestic space, gender, knowledge, and power. This approach serves to investigate the cultural roots of the ›closet‹ – the male homosexual secret – which reveals a more general notion of male secrecy in modern society. The study thus contributes to a better understanding of the cultural history of masculinities and sexualities.
