"Nearly four hundred years ago, the Spanish colonizer of New Mexico, Don Juan de Onate, found 'succor' at an Indian Pueblo alongside the Rio Grande, in an area where crops had been grown for generations before the Spaniards came. Socorro became an important stopping place along trade routes. With the growth of mining interests in the vicinity in the late nineteenth century, the town experienced phenomenal growth. Industries and agriculture developed, and Socorro ranked with Santa Fe, Albuquerque, and Las Vegas in its importance to the Territory of New Mexico. But the boom ended by the turn of the century and Socorro resumed its placid atmosphere."--back cover.
