There is an increasing need to construct engineering structures in the Arctic seas. The requirement is principally generated by the oil and gas industry, because of the substantial reserves that are known to exist offshore in the Beaufort Sea, the Caspian Sea, the Barents Sea, the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Sakhalin, the Canadian Arctic, and almost certainly elsewhere. Structures have to withstand the severe environmental forces generated by sea ice, a subject that is developing rapidly but is still far from completely understood. Underwater pipelines have to be safe against ice gouging and strudel scour, but also have to be constructed safely and economically. The social and human environment has to be understood and respected.This important book intentionally takes a broad view, and vividly accounts for the many and often subtle interactions between the different factors. It is illustrated by case studies of actual projects.
Knowing the safety factor for limit states such as plastic collapse, low cycle fatigue or ratcheting is always a major design consideration for civil and mechanical engineering structures that are subjected to loads. Direct methods of limit or shakedown analysis that proceed to directly find the limit states offer a better alternative than exact time-stepping calculations as, on one hand, an exact loading history is scarcely known, and on the other they are much less time-consuming. This book presents the state of the art on various topics concerning these methods, such as theoretical advances in limit and shakedown analysis, the development of relevant algorithms and computational procedures, sophisticated modeling of inelastic material behavior like hardening, non-associated flow rules, material damage and fatigue, contact and friction, homogenization and composites.
This book provides an overview of direct methods, such as limit and shakedown analysis, which are intended for avoiding cumbersome step-by-step calculations to determine the limit states of mechanical structures under monotone, cyclic or variable actions with unknown loading history. The book comprises several contributions that demonstrate how tremendous advances in numerical methods, especially in optimization, have contributed to the success of direct methods and their applicability to practical engineering problems in structural mechanics and mechanics of materials. The contents reflect the outcomes of the workshop “Direct Methods for Limit State of Materials and Structures,” held in Cosenza, Italy in June 2022.
This book is designed to facilitate teaching and informal discussion in a supportive and friendly environment. The seminar provides a forum for postgraduate students to present their research results and train their presentation and discussion skills. Furthermore, it allows for extensive discussion of current research being conducted in the wider area of advanced structured materials. Doing so, it builds a wider postgraduate community and offers networking opportunities for early career researchers. In addition to focused lectures, the seminar provides specialized teaching/overview lectures from experienced senior academics. The 2023 Postgraduate Seminar entitled “Advanced Structured Materials: Development - Manufacturing - Characterization – Applications” was held from 20 till 24 May 2024 in Porto. The presented postgraduate lectures had a strong focus on polymer mechanics, composite materials, and additive manufacturing.

A biography of Elkes' father (b. 1879), a physician, who was the head of the Judenrat in Kovno during the Nazi occupation of Lithuania (1941-44). Relying heavily on the diary of Avraham Tory (published in Hebrew in 1988), describes the establishment of the ghetto in July 1941 and of the Judenrat, the massacre of ca. 9,000 Jews in October 1941, the ghetto's transformation into a concentration camp in November 1943. After a roundup in March 1944, in which ca. 2,000 people were killed, the members of the Judenrat were arrested. In July the ghetto was liquidated. Elkes was sent to the Landsberg labor camp, where he died on a hunger strike. Throughout the war, Elkes was highly respected by the Jews in the ghetto and tried to alleviate their plight. His wife was deported to Stutthof and survived. His son and daughter emigrated to England in the 1930s. Pp. 37-64 contain photographs.
