The Daughter Zion allegory represents a particular narrative articulation of the paradigm of bridal mysticism deriving from the Song of Songs, the core element of which is the quest of Daughter Zion for a worthy object of love. Examining medieval German religious writing (verse and prose) and Dutch prose works, Annette Volfing shows that this storyline provides an excellent springboard for investigating key aspects of medieval religious and literary culture. In particular, she argues, the allegory lends itself to an exploration of the medieval sense of self; of the scope of human agency within the mystical encounter; of the gendering of the religious subject; of conceptions of space and encl...

The first full-length study of the notion of marriage to Jesus in late medieval and early modern popular culture, this book treats the transmission and transformation of ideas about this concept as a case study in the formation of religious belief and popular culture. Marrying Jesus in Medieval and Early Modern Northern Europe provides a history of the dispersion of theology about the bride of Christ in the period between the twelfth and seventeenth centuries and explains how this metaphor, initially devised for a religious elite, became integral to the laity's pursuit of salvation. Unlike recent publications on the bride of Christ, which explore the gendering of sanctity or the poetics of r...

In popular thought, Christianity is often figured as being opposed to dance. Throughout the medieval era, the Latin Church denounced and prohibited dancing, often aligning it with demonic intervention, lust, pride, and sacrilege. However, Ringleaders of Redemption reveals how the historical sources - including biblical commentaries, sermons, saints' lives, ecclesiastical statutes, mystical treatises, vernacular literature, and iconography from France, Italy, Germany, England, Spain, and beyond - tell a different story. During the High and Late Middle Ages, Western theologians, liturgists, and mystics not only tolerated dance; they transformed it into a dynamic component of religious thought and practice.

From Sites of Memory to Cybersights

This interdisciplinary study explores the legacies of Japanese American World War II internment experiences and the factors influencing the construction and mediation of cultural memory and national/ethnic identity in the United States. It discusses issues of contested memory and shows how once repressed historic events are selectively commemorated or even erased. By focusing on representations of Japanese American internment experiences recovered, reframed or created since the 1980s, the study acknowledges that these experiences continue to be reevaluated in a climate of ethnic politicization. Covering sites of memory ranging from historic places of Japanese American internment to memorials built both at centers of Japanese American cultural life as well as at centers of national cultural identity, the study also critically approaches sites - or rather sights - in cyberspace that may be visited only virtually, thus taking the scholarship of American memory studies into the digital realm.

"Hie Lert Uns Der Meister"

"This study is the fullest available on the animal fables of Aesop and Avian and their reception in the Middle Ages. Assembling (and partly discovering) this corpus of more than seventy manuscripts from libraries in some twelve different countries -- a major achievement in itself -- Wright develops from this rich collection of medieval Latin fable collections and their pedagogical prose commentaries new perspectives on a number of larger issues of medieval culture, particularly the character of school life and the development of a learned vernacular literature. These fables and their commentaries served widely as textbooks throughout the Middle Ages, and Wright succeeds in explaining how they were taught and learned in the medieval classroom. He also demonstrates their influence on five German fable collections of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. This study reconceives and rewrites the history of the medieval German fable." -- from dustjacket.
