Longing to Belong
An emblematic figure of the 'bourgeois century,' the parvenu represents the Other on which a society depends. This drama of exclusion is symptomatic of nineteenth-century society: ambivalent about social mobility, oscillating between a new sense of opportunity for all and a backward-looking retrenchment to rigid social structures.
Dracut
Dracut, a typical New England town with a brilliant but almost forgotten past, was founded in 1701, or 1702 according to the modern Gregorian calendar. A Yankee tradition grew up there side by side with the cultural heritage of many immigrant groups, and this early diversity distinguished the community from some of its neighbors. Dracut's first landowner was John Webb, whose property was sold in the seventeenth century to the town's first resident, Edward Coburn. Dracut men served valiantly in the Revolutionary War, and many residents figured prominently in the fields of politics and business. This marvelous new photographic history of Dracut chronicles the contributions of many and puts into context the role of the town in the history of the United States.

Musik-Sammlungen - Speicher interkultureller Prozesse
2 Teilbande im Schuber Sammlungen, Bibliotheken und Archive bilden zentrale Orte vielschichtiger sozialer Interaktionen und kulturhistorischer Prozesse. Deshalb sind die Strukturen von Musik-Sammlungen 2005 wahrend eines internationalen Kongresses im Kontext kultureller Erinnerung thematisiert und im Blick auf den internationalen Diskurs zwischen dem deutschsprachigen Raum und dem ostlichen Europa hin untersucht worden. Der erste Teilband des entsprechenden Berichts bietet drei theoriegeleitete Grundsatzreferate und eroffnet sodann eine Reihe von Einzelbeitragen, die zunachst Musik-Sammlungen aus Tschechien, Lettland, Litauen, Italien (Sudtirol), Osterreich, Slowenien und Serbien gewidmet sind. Der zweite Teilband rundet diese Folge ab mit Beschreibungen von Archiv-Bestanden aus der Ukraine, aus Russland und Polen, aus der Slowakei sowie den USA. Abschliessend macht er in komprimierter Form die Fragestellungen, Statements und Ergebnisse dreier Podiumsdiskussionen zuganglich. Jedem Aufsatz ist ein Abstract in Englisch und Deutsch beigegeben; bei Ubersetzungen folgt uberdies eine Zusammenfassung in der Originalsprache.
