Peter Mattern (1706-1782), his wife Maria Anna Catherina and their family, emigrated in 1732 from Germany (via Rotterdam) to Philadelphia. They settled in Upper Hanover Township, Northampton (now Montgomery) County, Pennsylvania. Descendants and relatives lived in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., North Carolina, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Oregon, California and elsewhere.

The eighteen volumes of Detailed Reports on the Salzburger Emigrants Who Settled in America (reproduced in sixteen discrete books) contain the diaries and letters of Lutheran pastors who ministered to the Salzburgers, German-speaking Protestant refugees, in Georgia. Samuel Urlsperger collected and edited these writings into the Urlsperger Reports printed at Orphanage Press, Halle, Germany, from 1735 to 1760. The original German publication, Ausführliche Nachricht von den saltzburgischen Emigranten, is available through the Internet Archive, but this English-language translation has not been available online until now.
