The Mental-State Estimation Workshop - 1987 was held June 3-4, 1987, in Williamsburg 9 Virginia. The workshop was sponsored by the Human Engineering Methods Group9 Crew/Vehicle Interface Research Branch, Flight Management Division, NASA Langley Research Center, and the Center for Ergonomics Research and Training, Old Dominion University, Norfolk_ Virginia. A total of 78 persons attended the workshop, and they represented the government, corporations, and universities. One purpose of the workshop was to examine the status of the idea that cognitive and emotional processes (or mental states) are reflected in discriminable patterns of physiological response. The workshop was designed to explore the potential of a technology based on this concept and the projected flight management applications for such a technology. The papers presented in the conference proceedings reflect the breadth of techniques and areas of study in the examination of mental states and human performance.
