Ferdinand Orthner was born in Alstadt, Austria. He married Marie Elisabeth Messerschmidt (d. 1864). They had three sons born from 1855 to 1861. He married again and had a daughter in 1866. His children emigrated and settled in Saskatchewan and Texas.
