Welcome to the proceedings of PATMOS 2003. This was the 13th in a series of international workshops held in several locations in Europe. Over the years, PATMOS has gained recognition as one of the major European events devoted to power and timing aspects of integrated circuit and system design. Despite its signi?cant growth and development, PATMOS can still be considered as a very informal forum, featuring high-level scienti?c presentations together with open discussions and panel sessions in a free and relaxed environment. This year, PATMOS took place in Turin, Italy, organized by the Politecnico di Torino, with technical co-sponsorship from the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society and the gen...

The Self-Organizing Map, or Kohonen Map, is one of the most widely used neural network algorithms, with thousands of applications covered in the literature. It was one of the strong underlying factors in the popularity of neural networks starting in the early 80's. Currently this method has been included in a large number of commercial and public domain software packages. In this book, top experts on the SOM method take a look at the state of the art and the future of this computing paradigm. The 30 chapters of this book cover the current status of SOM theory, such as connections of SOM to clustering, classification, probabilistic models, and energy functions. Many applications of the SOM are given, with data mining and exploratory data analysis the central topic, applied to large databases of financial data, medical data, free-form text documents, digital images, speech, and process measurements. Biological models related to the SOM are also discussed.

Computer Arithmetic

This is the new edition of the classic book Computer Arithmetic in three volumes published originally in 1990 by IEEE Computer Society Press. As in the original, the book contains many classic papers treating advanced concepts in computer arithmetic, which is very suitable as stand-alone textbooks or complementary materials to textbooks on computer arithmetic for graduate students and research professionals interested in the field. Told in the words of the initial developers, this book conveys the excitement of the creators, and the implementations provide insight into the details necessary to realize real chips. This second volume presents topics on error tolerant arithmetic, digit on-line ...

Abstract: "This report describes a new and improved implementation of a Manchester Carry-skip Adder. By introducing kick-back circuitry in the carry chain, the conventional quadratic behavior of a ripple carry is changed to linear behavior. The implementation also uses skips over variably sized blocks, which has the effect of increasing the speed even further. The idea of using variable skip sizes was suggested in 1961 by M. Lehman and N. Burla and has since been studied by many researchers, but the use of kick-back circuitry changes the analysis, which for the most part is based on SPICE simulations. Some models showing the behavior of the kick-back circuitry are presented. The adder, as it is described here, was implemented using a 2-micron CMOS process, and results of actual measurements are included."
