Immune Tolerance Dual Role: Advancements in Cancer and Autoimmune Diseases

In the exploration of immunological functions, cancer and autoimmune diseases share a common foundation — the disruption of immune tolerance. Immune tolerance is critical as it enables the body to avoid attacking its own tissues while simultaneously preventing cancer cells from being detected and destroyed by the immune system. This intersection of cancer camouflage and autoimmune attack forms a pivotal area of study, particularly in terms of how immune adaptations in one field can inform treatment strategies in the other. The investigation of immune checkpoints has dramatically deepened our understanding of these diseases. By exploring such mechanisms, researchers have developed therapies that manipulate immune responses — for instance, checkpoint inhibitors like PD-1 blocking antibodies used in cancer treatment have been mirrored by PD-1 agonists in managing autoimmune conditions. This Research Topic aims to explore novel interventions that can precisely tune the immune response without widespread systemic effects, thereby enhancing patient outcomes in both cancer and autoimmune diseases.

Design Studies and Intelligence Engineering

The technologies applied in design studies vary from basic theories to more application-based systems, and intelligence engineering technologies – such as computer-aided industrial design, human factor design, and greenhouse design – play a significant role in design science. Intelligence engineering technologies encompass both theoretical and application perspectives, such as computational technologies, sensing technologies, and video detection. Intelligence engineering is multidisciplinary in nature, promoting cooperation, exchange and discussion between organizations and researchers from diverse fields. This book presents the proceedings of DSIE2021, the 2021 International Symposium o...

Oxygen/Nitrogen Radicals: Cell Injury and Disease

A veritable mountain of literature has been published showing the causal relationship of reactive oxygen/nitrogen species in human disease conditions, and there has been an explosion in the understanding of oxidative stress, the protective role of antioxidants and molecular events involved in the regulation of transcription, editing, and translation of key events leading to disease processes. Strategies need to be developed for prevention of diseases by allowing scientists and clinicians to obtain information on new and emerging advances. The molecular mechanisms involved in several diseases including Alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes, arthritis, and Parkinson's disease, as well as disorders of the eye, skin, cardiac, and pulmonary systems are discussed in this volume, along with scientific evidence supporting the value of dietary supplementation with antioxidants in the prevention of cellular damage leading to chronic disease. Special in vivo techniques are also discussed at length, along with the role of molecular studies in human risk assessment.

What do we know about COVID-19 implications for cardiovascular disease?

he coronavirus epidemic is a major concern for each one of us, whether we figure among the regular citizens, those affected by the disease, or those involved in their treatment. Much has already been said, however, there is still a lack of profound understanding regarding specific situations, such as the interaction between the virus and the cardiovascular system. We have read that elderly people with coronary artery disease, diabetes or hypertension as well as those with a history of stroke may have a higher risk of being infected, seem to be more severely affected than other persons, and have a higher mortality rate. But other infections, flus and stress situations have previously been shown to also affect the risk and prognosis of patients with cardiovascular disease, through myocarditis, arrhythmias, acute coronary syndromes, acute heart failure or cardiogenic shock.

This Action Plan describes the conservation status of 23 species of the order Crocodylia found worldwide. The plan is arranged in three principal sections: an Introductory overview, Country accounts, and Species accounts. Each Country account describes the status of wild populations, and current management programmes. The Species accounts summarise the conservation status, principle threats, and existing management programmes and then describe the ecology and natural history of the species and set out recommended priority conservation projects.
