For designers and users, this British work treats combustion and heat transfer for the development of efficient and reliable boilers. Covers the evolution of steam and hot water boilers from their inception to the many variants now used in industry throughout the world. Safety, efficiency, and cost are discussed, as are auxilliaries, firing appliances, chimneys, controls, and instrumentation. Covers chemical and physical aspects of combustion, deposits and corrosions on combustion, and the chemical treatment of water used in steam and hot water boilers. This book provides the information on boilers and the associated equipment, as used at sea, required by marine engineers taking the Steam Paper, Class Two, for the Department of Transport's Certificate of Competency for Marine Engineer Officers. Much of the information is given in the form of comprehensive answers to typical examination questions, with supporting diagrams that help the reader to understand and remember important machinery details. In this new edition the book has been updated throughout with new material on welded boilers, various types of water tube boiler, rotary air heater, water level alarm, consolidated type safety valve, hydraulic testing and various aspects of survey, maintenance and operational problems.
This book describes how to make two vertical and two horizontal copper boilers with a capacity of less than three-bar litres. All four boilers are heated with liquid petroleum gas (LPG) contained in small refillable or disposable tanks. With over 285 colour photographs and diagrams, it includes the tools and equipment required, together with important safety considerations; how to work the various materials to make the necessary parts; step-by-step instructions on the technique of silver solder; the testing regime; a review of various sizes and shapes of gas burners and how to connect them; instructions for building replacements for the well-known Verto boiler, a vertical boat boiler, a portable-engine boiler and a Cornish boiler with Galloway tubes. Finally, there is guidance on the efficient operation and essential maintenance of steam boilers and safety calculations and a list of useful contacts.
The popularity of the Boiler Operators Handbook has prompted the issue of a revised edition. Other than a relatively small number of developments, essentially associated with solid fuel firing methods using the fluidised bed technique, no radical changes have occurred since the first edition of the Handbook was issued in 1969. In revising a work of this kind there is a great temptation to omit practices that are now less common in the UK. In view of the enormous pressure on Global energy resources, however, the chapters dealing in methods of hand-firing have been retained in the hope that they may be of value to those in the less developed nations where energy problems are infinitely greater...
