The Self The Soul and The World: Affect Reason and Complexity

This book looks at the affective-cognitive roots of how the human mind inquires into the workings of nature and, more generally, how the mind confronts reality. Reality is an infinitely complex system, in virtue of which the mind can comprehend it only in bits and pieces, by making up interpretations of the myriads of signals received from the world by way of integrating those with information stored from the past. This constitutes a piecemeal interpretation by which we assemble our phenomenal reality. In perceiving the complex world and responding to it, the mind invokes the logic of affect and the logic of reason, the former mostly innate and implicit, and the latter generated consciously ...

How neuroethics can be increasingly relevant and informative for inclusive social policy and political discourse about brain science and technologies. Neuroethics, a field just over two decades old, addresses both ethical issues generated in and by brain sciences and the neuroscientific studies of moral and ethical thought and action. These foci are reciprocally interactive and prompt questions of how science and ethics can and should harmonize. In Bioethics and Brains, John R. Shook and James Giordano ask: How can the brain sciences inform ethics? And how might ethics guide the brain sciences and their real-world applications? The authors’ structure for a disciplined neuroethics reconcile...

Understanding Non-Ordinary Mental Expressions and their Capabilities

Non-Ordinary Mental Expressions include a group of ostensibly odd experiences and procedures able to elicit them, including near-death experiences, memories of previous lives, synesthesia, synchronicity, mystical experiences, and superior states of consciousness on the way to the Self and spiritual development. The latter includes meditation, hypnosis, incubation, and lucid dreaming, valuable introspective techniques with their potential for healing, metacognition, and Self-knowledge. In the past they have been misunderstood and mainly considered as dysfunctional phenomena from the ruling mechanist-reductionist perspectives of medicine. Instead, they are meaningful phenomena to be properly c...

This book presents compact and informative descriptions of the most promising new projects in brain-computer interface (BCI) research. As in earlier volumes in this series, the contributions come from many of the best-known groups in BCI research. Each of these chapters provides an overview of a project that was nominated for the most prestigious award in the BCI community: the Annual BCI Research Award. The book also contains an introduction and discussion with a review of major trends reflected in the awards. This volume also introduces a new type of contribution, namely a chapter"Trends in BCI Research" that summarizes a top trend in the BCI research community. This year's "Trends in BCI Research" addresses BCI technology to help patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC) and related conditions, including new work that goes beyond communication to diagnosis and even prediction.
