Biohydrogen is considered the most promising energy carrier and its utilization for energy storage is a timely technology. This book presents latest research results and strategies evolving from an international research cooperation, discussing the current status of Biohydrogen research and picturing future trends and applications.
Environmental Biotechnology is an emerging field of scientific and technological investigations that is truly global. People around the world are now joined together by a common technical bond. Furthermore, popular recognition is high for the environmental problems being faced and solved by biotechnology methods. With a feeling of winning, but recognizing there is much work to be done, workers with in-depth experience in solving one problem in environmental biotechnology meet to learn from the background of other workers how they, too, are addressing and solving environmental problems. This text includes papers from the third biennial meeting of the International Society for Environmental Bi...

Bioelectrochemical Systems (BESs) are innovative and sustainable devices. They combine biological and electrochemical processes to engineer sensors, treat wastewater and/or produce electricity, fuel or high-value chemicals. In BESs, scientists have managed to incorporate biological catalysts, i.e. enzymes and/or microorganisms, and make them work in advanced electrochemical cells. BESs operate under mild conditions — at close to ambient temperature and pressure and at circumneutral pH — and represent a sustainable alternative to precious metal-based systems. Incorporating biological catalysts into devices while maintaining their activity and achieving electrical communication with electrode surfaces is a critical challenge when trying to advance the field of BESs.From implantable enzymatic biosensors to microbial electrosynthesis, and from laboratory-scale systems and fundamental studies to marketed devices, this book provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances related to functional electrodes for BESs. Suitable for researchers and graduate students of chemistry, biochemistry, materials science and environmental science and technology.
Extensively revised and updated, Handbook of Water Analysis, Second Edition provides current analytical techniques for detecting compounds in water samples. Maintaining the detailed and accessible style of the original, this edition demonstrates water sampling and preservation methods by enumerating different ways to measure chemical and radiologic
Providing the reader with an up-to-date digest of the most important current research carried out in the field, this volume is compiled and written by leading experts. This volume reviews the trends in electrochemical sensing and its application and touches on research areas from a diverse range, including electrochemical detection of infectious pathogens, hybrid materials for electrocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis, chip fabrication from an electrochemical perspective and exploring forensic mysteries with electrochemical sensors, to name just a few. Coverage is extensive and will appeal to a broad readership from chemists and biochemists to engineers and materials scientists. The reviews of established and current interest in the field make this volume a key reference for researchers in this exciting and developing area.
Publishes original critical reviews of the significant literature and current development in microbiology.
Whenever nature has a difficult task to perform it can be expected that a metal ion or a cluster of such ions is employed. Metal ions are indispensable for the integrity of biological structures and the catalysis of biological reactions. Knowledge about their mode of action, their uptake in the cell, their handling and their storage is important for the development of new pharmaceuticals. This book summarizes latest results of interdisciplinary research on several universities.
