1949: American Rudy Chapman is planning his escape from Communist East Germany. For the past decade, he has survived the Nazi regime's brutality by teaching English in the tiny village of Grossheringen and translating at a POW camp while secretly aiding Allied POW code writers. Rudy falls in love with Miriam, a young Jewish woman in hiding, and remains optimistic that Miriam's family is alive. At war's end, unseen forces pull the couple apart. Miriam is utterly convinced her family has vanished, yet Rudy remains a Holocaust skeptic. Eventually escaping to West Germany, Rudy is recruited by the Allies to assist post-war displaced persons. Finally learning that the Holocaust was real, Rudy is devastated. Hoping to start a new life with Miriam, he longs to reunite with her. But will Miriam survive her daunting escape to the West? A Merriam Press Historical Fiction book.

In this volume, we try to understand the "Mamluk Empire" not as a confined space but as a region where several nodes of different networks existed side-by-side and at the same time. In our opinion, these networks constitute to a great extent the core of the so-called Mamluk society; they form the basis of the social order. Following, in part, concepts refined in the New Area Studies, recent reflections about the phenomenon of the "Empire – State", trajectories in today's Global History, and the spatial turn in modern historiography, we intend to identify a number of physical and cognitive networks with one or more nodes in Mamluk-controlled territories. In addition to this, one of the most important analytical questions would be to define the role of these networks in Mamluk society.

On Amistà

Although we often think of friendship today as an indisputable value of human social life, for thinkers and writers across late medieval Christian society friendship raised a number of social and ethical dilemmas that needed to be carefully negotiated. On Amistà analyses these dilemmas and looks at how Dante’s strategic articulations of friendship evolved across the phases of his literary career as he manoeuvred between different social groups and settings. Elizabeth Coggeshall reveals that friendship was not an unequivocal moral good for the writers of late medieval Italy. Instead, it was an ambiguous term to be deployed strategically, describing a wide range of social relationships such...
