Dwarf Galaxies: Keys to Galaxy Formation and Evolution
Dwarf galaxy research constitutes an extremely vibrant field of astrophysical research, with many long-standing questions still unsettled and new ones constantly arising. The intriguing diversity of the dwarf galaxy population, observed with advanced ground-based and space-borne observatories over a wide spectral window providing an unprecedented level of detail, poses new challenges for both observers and theoreticians. The aim of this symposium was to bring together these two groups to exchange ideas and new results on the many evolutionary aspects of and open issues concerning dwarf galaxies. The main topics addressed include: the birth of dwarf galaxies: theoretical concepts and observable relics across wavelengths and time, the morphological, structural and chemical evolution of dwarf galaxies, possible evolutionary connections between early-type and late-type dwarfs, the star formation history of dwarf galaxies and its dependence on intrinsic and environmental properties, the origin and implications of starburst activity in dwarf galaxies, the fate of dwarfish systems born out of tidally ejected matter in galaxy collisions.
New Vision Of An Old Cluster, A - Untangling Coma Berenices
Together with Virgo, the Coma Berenices cluster is one of the most well-studied clusters at all wavelengths and in all aspects, from the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect to star formation in galaxies. In a way, it is the prototype of rich clusters. Recent observational results, linked to the improvement of techniques such as X-ray and UV observations, along with multi-object spectroscopy, have shown that they could change our vision of this cluster. It is thus time for observers and theoreticians to confront all these new ideas and observations on the Coma cluster.The topics in this volume include: cosmological aspects of the Coma cluster, comparison with distant clusters; substructures; matter content and distribution; Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect; dynamical modelling, cluster dynamics; environmental effects on galaxies, star formation.
Consumer Debt and Social Exclusion in Europe
This book analyses the dichotomy between the goal of social inclusion and the effect of social exclusion through over-indebtedness since 2008 in Europe. Filling a vital gap in the current literature on the effects of the financial and economic crisis, this volume puts into context academic discussion with the real-life dimension of over-indebtedness. Reports from six European countries provide socio-economic and legal information on over-indebtedness as well as the regulatory and judicial responses to the problems entailed by over-indebtedness. They form the empirical background for five analyses of different aspects of the inclusion-exclusion dichotomy. It becomes clear that in the context of credit expansion, individual over-indebtedness has turned into a social issue, which the current design of the consumer credit and mortgage system in Europe has helped to produce while disregarding the consequential danger of social exclusion.
