Si tratta di un campo disciplinare, ancora poco esplorato nel contesto italiano, che ha lo scopo di esaminare strutture, servizi, pratiche e funzioni delle biblioteche per evidenziarne aspetti e peculiarità in un contesto definito, mettendo in relazione realtà diverse, analizzando cause ed effetti delle specificità emerse e valutando i fattori che ne influenzano lo sviluppo.
