The Dynamics of European Integration

In Europe’s recent history, there have been several challenges to the strength of the European Union—Brexit, COVID, financial crises, and global tensions—bringing an increased need to understand the ways that the European Union (EU) could successfully stay together or fall apart. In examining how the European Union has changed since 1993, important puzzles have emerged, including how national government functions are transferred to the EU without reforming the EU, how increased transparency is announced while decisions are approved in informal meetings, and how the effects of the polarizing rise of Euroscepticism can be managed to still promote the formation of solidarity and trust amo...

City-regions have gained economic and political power in the process of globalisation. Many of them use this power to develop their own international activities. This book investigates why city-regions go global and the consequences of their newly gained self-confidence on the international scale. The book analyses Swiss and EU city-regions' international activities with seven in-depth case studies. The book shows that the local economic setting, and the political response in developing international activities, are closely linked. Not only has urban politics changed due to its international dimension, but also the interplay between the core city, the agglomeration communities, the regional, the national, and EU levels. Understanding the role of the EU in city-regions' international activities is crucial for comprehending recent trends in urban governance.

Beyond Recognition

This thesis addresses the need to balance the use of facial recognition systems with the need to protect personal privacy in machine learning and biometric identification. As advances in deep learning accelerate their evolution, facial recognition systems enhance security capabilities, but also risk invading personal privacy. Our research identifies and addresses critical vulnerabilities inherent in facial recognition systems, and proposes innovative privacy-enhancing technologies that anonymize facial data while maintaining its utility for legitimate applications. Our investigation centers on the development of methodologies and frameworks that achieve k-anonymity in facial datasets; levera...

Now in its revised, updated Second Edition, this unique atlas is a practical, well-organized, and thoroughly illustrated guide to the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases. The book combines succinct, pragmatic discussions of diagnostic and therapeutic strategies with more than 700 full-color retinal photographs, which clearly and vividly depict the distinguishing features of each disease and the most effective treatment techniques. The photographs and text will enable clinicians to rapidly diagnose specific disease entities and determine the most appropriate medical or surgical therapy. The Second Edition features four new chapters on endophthalmitis; submacular surgery; arterial and related retinovascular occlusive disease; and macular holes and other surgical macular disorders. Numerous new illustrations have been added, and many illustrations from the previous edition have been replaced by new ones of greater clarity. Chapters have been updated to provide state-of-the-art information on current diagnostic and therapeutic modalities.
