The European Union as a Mediator in Post-Conflict Western Balkans
Attempting to pacify the emergent wars in the 1990s, the European Union mediation could not stop the vast destruction and prevent genocide from taking place right next door to the EU, the world’s biggest peace project. In the 21st century, the Western Balkans region has again become a subject of testing the EU’s “new” foreign policy instrument – mediation. This time, the EU assumed the role of a post-conflict mediator aiming to sustainably resolve the (intractable) conflicts in the post-war setting of the region. While its first mediations in the former Yugoslavia were unsuccessful, the EU's recent mediation attempts in the post-violent stage of the Balkans’ conflicts have resulted in varied outcomes. Introducing a new model, this book explains the varying effectiveness of EU mediation in post-conflict and analyses the determining conditions of the EU mediation efficiency in post-conflict settings. The book is among the few publications that shed light on EU mediation utilized as an instrument of conflict resolution that aims to solve protracted conflicts in post-conflict settings.
Teaching and Learning the European Union
This volume examines the EU’s changing educational context and its challenges. Based on an extensive survey of more than 2000 European Studies courses in 30 European countries, it maps and analyses the features of teaching methodologies as they emerge from both disciplinary as well as interdisciplinary curricula. Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino in Art Collections and in the History of Collecting
Raphael’s artworks, paintings, altarpieces, drawings, tapestries, cartoons, prints, ceramics and all other artifacts derived from his works, including copies and forgeries, have been the object of an often-frantic search from his death in 1520 onwards. France, Spain, Germany, England, and Italy were the main destinations for such artworks between the 16th and the 18th centuries, while the market spread overseas from the 19th century onwards. EU Committees as Influential Policymakers
The book addresses the question of how and where EU decisions are taken. There are about 1000 decisions each year. The Commission's legislative programme is limited, 16 proposals in 1997, 31 in 1998, therefore the great majority are taken elsewhere mainly in committees. Business is becoming increasingly aware of the role and influence of committees but increasingly frustrated because they are so 'secretive'. Committees do not publish their membership, agendas or minutes. This research will aim to shed some light on the process.
