Die Stärken der Fachsprachenforschung lagen bisher in der sorgfältigen quantitativen und qualitativen Analyse umfangreicher Materialkorpora sowie in den zahlreichen Versuchen, neue linguistische Theorien und Methoden auf ihren spezifischen Untersuchungsgegenstand anzuwenden. Kritik ist daran geübt worden, daß diese Forschung keine eigene Theorie und keine selbständigen Methoden entwickelt hat. Diese Einwände wurden im Handbuch berücksichtigt.
