What role did the Middle Ages play in the construction of Portuguese national identity in the modern age? Which medieval ideas, themes, objects, buildings, events, and figures contributed to this process? How did Portuguese intellectuals, artists, and politicians from the late-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth narrate, rework, and commemorate them? These are some of the questions that this book addresses. By examining historiography, heritage intervention, and historical commemorations, it demonstrates the ways by which certain views about the Portuguese Middle Ages were constructed, propagated, and used to serve different political agendas.

The emergence of a widespread ’plantation complex’, in which slave labour produced crops such as sugar on large estates funded by European capital, was a phenomenon of the New World. This book shows how the institution of slavery was transformed by the demand for labour in the Americas, to fill the gap between conquerors and vanquished Indians and to work in mines, workshops, ranches and, above all, on the new plantations that were established to exploit the empty lands. The essays use quantitative methodology to draw conclusions about slave existence and demography, and examine the profitability and varying degrees of harshness of slave systems in different regions. They also consider the questions of manumission and slave resistance.

Roots and Branches: Current Directions in Slave Studies discusses slavery including its history and impact on modern society. Organized into nine chapters, the book first covers slavery in the Americas, and then discusses slavery and its legacy. The first two chapters discuss the dispersion of African population and slavery within Africa, and the third chapter concerns itself with slave plantations. Chapter 4 discusses the Afro-American slave culture, while Chapter 5 covers the relationship between slavery and Protestant ethics. The sixth chapter covers the legacy of slave families in North America, and the next chapter relates slavery and peasantry as a process. Chapter 8 tackles the relationship between race and slavery in the Americas, and the last chapter deals with slavery and underdevelopment. Readers concerned with sociological issues, specifically slavery, will find this book a great source of insights.

Scientific motivation to publish this book comes from the increased interest in the study of toxoplasmosis, showed all over the world. Though the Toxoplasma gondii infection was first discovered in 1908, toxoplasmosis remains a today's research topic, a realm of questions and dilemmas that interest both the veterinarians and the human doctors. Studies in the field are directed to the epidemiology of the disease, the sources of infection, epidemiological chains, being underlined the important feature in the transmission of this parasite: the ability to pass from one intermediate host to another intermediate host without passing through the final host - felids.
