This new volume in the series Yearbook of the Research Centre for German and Austrian Exile Studies, entitled Exile and Gender: Literature and the Press, edited by Charmian Brinson and Andrea Hammel, focuses on the work of exiled women writers and journalists as well as on gendered representations in the writing of both male and female exiled writers. Spanish Republicans and the Second World War tells the stories of the 500,000 Spanish Republicans that fled across the Pyrenees in 1939 as Catalonia fell to Franco’s victorious army in the final weeks of the Civil War. Many of the exiles played an active part in the Second World War. The Pyrenees in the Modern Era
This original study examines different incarnations of the Pyrenees, beginning with the assumptions of 18th-century geologists, who treated the mountains like a laboratory, and romantic 19th-century tourists and habitués of the spa resorts, who went in search of the picturesque and the sublime. The book analyses the individual visions of the heroic Pyrenees which in turn fascinated 19th-century mountaineers and the racing cyclists of the early Tour de France. Martyn Lyons also investigates the role of the Pyrenees during the Second World War as an escape route from Nazi-occupied France, when for thousands of refugees these dangerous borderlands became 'the mountains of liberty', and considers the place of the Pyrenees in recent times right up to the present day. Drawing on travel writing, press reports and scientific texts in several languages, The Pyrenees in the Modern Era explores both the French and Spanish sides of the Pyrenees to provide a nuanced historical understanding of the cultural construction of one of Europe's most prominent border regions. Teaching Representations of the Spanish Civil War
It was the stuff of Capa, Hemingway, Orwell, Picasso, Rodoreda, Sender, and a host of others working in Catalan, German, Irish and Spanish from both sides of the Atlantic. It is also very difficult to teach, not only because the Spanish Civil War is perceived as the precursor to World War II but also because it has been heavily romanticized. This collection of articles and resources cuts to the events and their real impact on history, literature and the arts and includes commentary on contexts, rhetoric, ideology, writing, film, music, iconography and the visual, memory and displacement. This stands alone as a series of accounts of the ways the war was and is represented, giving narratives of such elements as the memories of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade and the uses of allegory, but it is also particularly valuable through its lists of resources and course syllabi.

Carlins amb armes en temps de pau. Altres efemèrides d'interès (1840-1842) és una altra important contribució al coneixement del primer carlisme escrita per l'autor de Carlins i Bandolers a Catalunya (1840-1850) i una contundent confirmació que el país després de la Guerra dels Set Anys, acabada oficialment el juliol de 1840, visqué en latent estat bèl·lic fins a enllaçar amb la Guerra dels Matiners l'estiu de 1846. Atès que el bienni estudiat, també conegut com a Regència d'Espartero, és un esclat de variats desvetllaments i de la transició política, l'autor, en un exercici d'història global, inclou innovadores aportacions de diversa temàtica com literatura, termalisme, agricultura o climatologia i, per acabar de delectar el lector, amaneix els textos amb un maó de variades anècdotes, que sempre han estat la poesia de la història.
