What types of robots will the future bring? How do biomedical devices help patients? Have you ever wondered how your phone works? In Engineering: Cool Women Who Design, readers ages 9 to 12 meet three women who are working hard in the engineering field. Elsa Garmire has designed many devices that use lasers and light. Amy Kerdok designs medical and surgical devices. Anna Stork co-founded LuminAID Lab, a company that produces solar lighting products for the developing world and beyond. Engineering combines high-interest content with links to online primary sources and essential questions that further expand kids’ knowledge and understanding of a topic they come in contact with every day. Nomad Press books in the Girls in Science series supply a bridge between girls’ interests and their potential futures by investigating science careers and introducing women who have succeeded in science. Compelling stories of real-life engineers provide readers with role models that they can look toward as examples of how it can be done.

Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery

This book provides a comprehensive, practical and timely review of all aspects of video-assisted, minimally invasive thoracic surgery, used to treat conditions of the lung, pleura, mediastinum, chest wall and diaphragm. Advances in technologies and instrumentation mean almost all thoracic surgeries may be performed by minimally invasive techniques rather than the traditional open surgeries. This book describes the thoracoscopic procedures in current specialist practice with discussion on indications, patient selection, surgical approaches, complications and clinical outcomes. The book opens with a summary of the rationale for minimally invasive surgery and when to convert to open surgery, as well as anaesthetic and peri-operative considerations, before covering the range of procedures organised by anatomical site. Numerous figures and diagrams describe every technique in detail and an authoritative, international team of contributors provides clinical experience and expert guidance.

Stone Sarcophagi of the Roman Empire

Over fourteen expeditions I drove a hundred thousand miles across four continents searching out churches, cathedrals, baptistries, catacombs, archeological sites, art galleries, antiquities museums, necropoleis, classical gardens, castles, fortresses, palaces, and private homes--any place that had a Roman Empire era stone sarcophagus. Beside the work of locating and cataloguing sarcophagi, the project I set for myself twenty years ago, I composed explanatory material to say how I did my work, noted what was to be found sculpted on sarcophagi, and developed a schema for organizing the various visual characteristics found on sarcophagi. On the model of outsider art, my work is outsider scholarshipyet here is documentation of 1,932 presently existing Roman Empire sarcophagi.
