Ambrose Lipscomb was born ca. 1633, perhaps at Silverton, Devonshire, England. He was living in what is now King William County, Virginia, by 1679. He and his wife, probably his second wife, had six children, all born between ca. 1670-1690. He died by June 1699. Descendants of his sons lived in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana, Alabama, Texas, and elsewhere.

George Whitefield (1714-70) was one of the best known and most widely travelled evangelical revivalist in the eighteenth century. For a time in the middle decades of the eighteenth century, Whitefield was the most famous person on both sides of the Atlantic. An Anglican clergyman, Whitefield soon transcended his denominational context as his itinerant ministry fuelled a Protestant renewal movement in Britain and the American colonies.
