War on Sacred Grounds
In War on Sacred Grounds, Ron E. Hassner investigates the causes and properties of struggles over sites that are both venerated and contested, and proposes ways for managing these disputes. Holy places can create the potential for clashes, not only between competing religious groups but also between religious groups and secular actors. Hassner illustrates this complex, violent dynamic through a series of case studies, including the conflict over Jerusalem and competing Hindu and Muslim claims over Ayodhya. He also analyses successful compromises that reduced conflict in Jerusalem in 1967 and in Mecca in 1979. In this updated edition of War on Sacred Grounds, Hassner reevaluates his findings and conclusions and surveys ongoing conflicts over holy sites.
Barbarism and Religion
In 2014, more people died at the hands of IS, Boko Haram, Al-Shabaab and affiliated groups than died as a result of religious violence during a single year period since the beginning of the 1990s. Teaching Peace amidst Conflict and Postcolonialism
In a world where post-conflict and postcolonial countries struggle to heal from the past and meet new challenges, peace education is often neglected and instrumentalized for political agendas. Sven Olof Pettersson (1818-1904) married Anna Stina Danielsdotter in 1840, and emigrated from Sweden to Spring Garden, Goodhue County, Minnesota in 1859. Descendants (chiefly spelling the surname Peterson) and relatives lived in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Montana, Washington, California and elsewhere. Includes at least two generations of ancestors in the parish of Lekeryd, Jönköping County of Sweden.
