Coherence and Quantum Optics

This volume presents the written versions of papers that were delivered at the Third Rochester Conference on Coherence and Quantum Optics, held on the campus of the University of Rochester during the three days of June 21-23, 1972. The Conference was a sequel to two earlier meetings devoted to the same field of modern physics, that were also held in Rochester in 1960 and in 1966. The scope of the Conference was largely confined to basic pro blems in the general area of optical coherence and quantum optics, and excluded engineering applications that are well covered by other meetings. Approximately 250 scientists from 9 countries participated, most of whom are active workers in the field. Alt...

Dynamical Groups And Spectrum Generating Algebras (In 2 Volumes)

This book contains comprehensive reviews and reprints on dynamical groups, spectrum generating algebras and spectrum supersymmetries, and their applications in atomic and molecular physics, nuclear physics, particle physics, and condensed matter physics. It is an important source for researchers as well as students who are doing courses on Quantum Mechanics and Advanced Quantum Mechanics.

Group Theoretical Methods in Physics: Proceedings of the Fifth International Colloquium provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of group theoretical methods in physics. This book provides a variety of topics, including nuclear collective motion, complex Riemannian geometry, quantum mechanics, and relativistic symmetry. Organized into six parts encompassing 64 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the theories of nuclear quadrupole dynamics. This text then examines the conventional approach in the determination of superstructures. Other chapters consider the Hamiltonian formalism and how it is applied to the KdV equation and to a slight variant of the KdV equation. This book discusses as well the significant differential equations of mathematical physics that are integrable Hamiltonian systems, including the equations governing self-induced transparency and the motion of particles under an inverse square potential. The final chapter deals with the decomposition of the tensor product of two irreducible representations of the symmetric group into a direct sum of irreducible representations. This book is a valuable resource for physicists.

Coherent States: Past, Present And Future - Proceedings Of The International Symposium

The book consists of lectures delivered at the International Symposium on Coherent States: Past, Present, and Future, held in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, June 14 - 17 1993. Both theoretical and experimental subjects are treated. Theoretical subjects dealt with include quantum optics, quantum chaos, condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, high energy physics and foundational issues such as quantum-classical connections and various semiclassical quantization schemes. Experimental topics dealt with principally concern atomic and molecular physics and especially lasers. Topics related to coherent states, most notably wavelets, are also included.

Crystal Optics with Spatial Dispersion, and Excitons

Spatial dispersion, namely, the dependence of the dielectric-constant tensor on the wave vector (i.e., on the wavelength) at a fixed frequency, is receiving increased attention in electrodynamics and condensed-matter optics, partic ularly in crystal optics. In contrast to frequency dispersion, namely, the frequency dependence of the dielectric constant, spatial dispersion is of interest in optics mainly when it leads to qualitatively new phenomena. One such phenomenon has been weH known for many years; it is the natural optical activity (gyrotropy). But there are other interesting effects due to spatial dispersion, namely, new normal waves near absorption lines, optical anisotropy of cubic c...

Commensurate and Incommensurate Phase Transitions

In this volume new group-theoretical methods for investigating phase transitions and symmetry problems in various types of crystals and liquid crystals are presented. New topics pertaining to the area of application of the theories of Landau and Birman, such as, transitions to modulated structures and the description of their symmetry, are discussed. Examples of applications of the group-theoretical methods are given, containing detailed calculations of symmetry changes at structural, magnetic, improper ferroelectric, commensurate-to-incommensurate, field-induced metamagnetic and liquid crystal phase transitions. This book will be invaluable to research workers at universities and scientific laboratories and postgraduate students specializing in solid state theory.

Vibrational Spectroscopy of Solids

This 1972 monograph is devoted to the analysis and interpretation of the infrared and Raman spectra of solid compounds, frequently used for their identification and characterization. It was thought unsatisfactory to analyse such spectra by the theory applicable to gas-phase samples, though this was frequently done. Furthermore, the results obtained by far infrared and laser Raman spectrometers, which detect the movement of atoms and/or molecules as a whole, had no gas-phase analogy. A separate approach to solid state vibrational spectra was therefore proposed within this volume. Dr Sherwood describes the solid state physics of vibrational spectroscopy and extends it to the more complex structures of low symmetry. He assumes an understanding of the infrared and Raman spectra of gases.

Semiconductors Probed by Ultrafast Laser Spectroscopy, Volume II discusses the use of ultrafast laser spectroscopy in studying fast physics in semiconductors. It reviews progress on the experimental and theoretical understanding of ultrafast events that occur on a picosecond and nanosecond time scale. This volume discusses electronic relaxation in amorphous semiconductors and the physical mechanisms during and after the interaction of an intense laser pulse with a semiconductor. It also covers the relaxation of carriers in semiconductors; transient optical pulse propagation; and methods of tim ...
