Visions of the Good Life

There is something wrong with us and the world we find ourselves in. In the Christian tradition, the concept of God's salvation describes the divine intervention to overcome this brokenness. However, such language might easily be misunderstood in the increasingly secular West. To make the reality of the doctrine of salvation understandable, relevant, and attractive for Europeans in the West, we might begin to think of it more in terms of relationship, well-being, and wholeness. Using a Biblical term, salvation is about the Shalom of the Reign of God. This volume explores the lived salvation practices of faith communities and missions, and their conceptualisations in the West: how is the good life perceived and practiced? Contributors are Clive Marsh, Jan Martijn Abrahamse, Dejan Aždajić, K. Francis Adebayo, Philip Bartholomä, Janel Kragt Bakker, Nigel Rooms, Karen Zwijze-Koning, Hans Schaeffer, Berdine van den Toren-Lekkerkerker, Jack Barentsen, Chris James, Sake Stoppels, Annemieke de Jonge, Bert Roor, Evelien van Duffelen, Harvey Kwiyani, James Butler, Kathy Ross, Ross Lockhart, and Stefan Paas.

Jesus Christ, Hermeneutics, and Scripture

Soteriology, not epistemology, is the best entrance to theological hermeneutics and to the doctrine of Scripture. The triune God uses Scripture to make the community of believers live in Christ. We hear the words of Scripture in the light of Easter and Pentecost. We understand Scripture from faith in Christ and with the mind of Christ. At the same time, we come to know Christ in Scripture and we receive the mind of Christ by reading Scripture. We remain in Christ by remaining in the Word. Understanding Scripture and Christlikeness mutually reinforce each other. Living a Christian life with God and our neighbor in God’s world will deepen our understanding of Scripture. This book explores the complex relationships between Jesus Christ, participation in Christ, theological hermeneutics, and the doctrine of Scripture. It shows the necessity of a holistic approach of life, knowledge, understanding, and renewal.

Seeds of the Church

The landmark World Council of Churches convergence text, The Church: Towards a Common Vision (2012), which has the potential to become this generation’s Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry (1982), invites the churches to envision how their own distinctive visions of the church might have a place in the global church’s imagination of the ecumenical future. Seeds of the Church: Towards an Ecumenical Baptist Ecclesiology is a collaborative effort by members of the Baptist World Alliance Commission on Baptist Doctrine and Christian Unity to respond to this invitation. This book contends that the distinctive Baptist ecclesial vision is best embodied in twelve core practices of Baptist churches an...

Many Modes – One Goal?

»Evangelism« has long held a central place in Christian discourse, yet it continues to invite diverse interpretations and raise important questions. What, precisely, is meant by evangelism? How does the worthy testimony of faith relate to the communicative dimension of Christian witness in everyday life? Does the term refer to a specific set of actions, or rather to the quality of those actions as »gospel«? And how should this gospel be articulated more clearly amid the tensions between church or community and increasingly pluralised societies? These questions were the subject of reflection for theologians from Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, Great Britain, and the United States a...

In Ordained Ministry in Free Church Perspective Jan Martijn Abrahamse presents a constructive theology of ordained ministry by returning to the life and thought of the English Separatist Robert Browne (c. 1550-1633). This study makes a substantial contribution not only by solving one of the most thorny problems in congregational ecclesiology, but also by recovering the legacy of this ecclesial pioneer. Through an in-depth analysis of Browne’s literature, the author provides a covenantal theology of ordained ministry in conversation with present-day authors Stanley Hauerwas and Kevin Vanhoozer. Inspired by the emerging trend of ‘theology of retrieval’ Abrahamse offers a methodologically innovative way of doing systematic theology in a manner in which voices from the past can be made fruitful for today.

Breekbaar Halleluja
