Bibliography of Semiotics, 1975-1985
This bibliography of semiotic studies covering the years 1975-1985 impressively reveals the world-wide intensification in the field. During this decade, national semiotic societies have been founded allover the world; a great number of international, national, and local semiotic conferences have taken place; the number of periodicals and book series devoted to semiotics has increased as has the number of books and dissertations in the field. Appraising Lakatos
This volume presents a critical re-evaluation of the ideas of Imre Lakatos, a leader in the shaping of what is called the new philosophy of science. The 17 contributions (the result of a joint venture between the Institute Vienna Circle and the Institute for History and Philosophy of Science of Eotvos U, Budapest) address his main theme of locating rationality within the scientific process, as well as his philosophy of mathematics, which emphasizes heuristics and mathematical practice over logical justification. They also include discussion of his personal life and politics, and contain a part of his Debrecen Ph.D. thesis as well as a bibliography of his Hungarian writings. Karl Jaspers
This book traces the work of German philosopher Karl Jaspers (1883-1969) from his origins as a young psychiatrist up to his maturity as an existentialist philosopher. The critique of Jaspers’s thought follows his attempts to grant meaning to the human search for self-understanding. It reveals the difficulties and frustrations entailed in this search. The book reveals to the reader Jaspers’s handling of these difficulties through constituting a philosophical relation toward the Being existing beyond the individual: other people, the world, and transcendence.
