Overcoming the Oppressors

How did Africans win their freedom in southern Africa? And what did they do with their freedom in the several decades since each southern African country became free? Overcoming the Oppressors discusses Black oppression succeeding white oppression, indicates why and how corruption prevails in the region, and explains why Botswana is exceptional in being non-corrupt and well-governed. The present problems of each country are analyzed and we learn what their leaders are doing to uplift their peoples.

While many fans remember The Lone Ranger, Ace Drummond and others, fewer focus on the facts that serials had their roots in silent film and that many foreign studios also produced serials, though few made it to the United States. The 471 serials and 100 series (continuing productions without the cliffhanger endings) from the United States and 136 serials and 37 series from other countries are included in this comprehensive reference work. Each entry includes title, country of origin, year, studio, number of episodes, running time or number of reels, episode titles, cast, production credits, and a plot synopsis.

The State and the Social

Botswana has been portrayed as a major case of exception in Africa—as an oasis of peace and harmony with an enduring parliamentary democracy, blessed with remarkable diamond-driven economic growth. Whereas the “failure” of other states on the continent is often attributed to the prevalence of indigenous political ideas and structures, the author argues that Botswana’s apparent success is not the result of Western ideas and practices of government having replaced indigenous ideas and structures. Rather, the postcolonial state of Botswana is best understood as a unique, complex formation, one that arose dialectically through the meeting of European ideas and practices with the symbolis...

Elizabeth Greenwood studied Sculpture at St. Martin's School of Art, and in Florence and Rome. She had a classical education, preferring Greek to Latin for the richness of its vocabulary and her sculpture with its references to Greek mythology reflects this predilection. She also writes Poetry. Apart from poetry, she enjoys producing emblematic fiction based on Mary Poppins' philosophical song "a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down", thus fulfilling the writer's task as an entertainer cum moralist. Both the poetical and the modelling activities date from early childhood. Although these were largely ignored, she was fortunate in having been born into a family where close relatives ha...

Captives were used as domestics, herders, hunters, agricultural laborers, porters, drivers, personal servants, and artisans. Slavery was legalized as inboekstelsel and portrayed by authorities as a form of "apprenticeship," in which abandoned and orphaned youths were bonded as unpaid laborers until their mid-twenties. In practice, they were captured as children and held for most of their lives. At least 60 percent of the slaves were female.
