Advances in Mathematical Fluid Mechanics

The present volume celebrates the 60th birthday of Professor Giovanni Paolo Galdi and honors his remarkable contributions to research in the ?eld of Mathematical Fluid Mechanics. The book contains a collection of 35 peer reviewed papers, with authors from 20 countries, re?ecting the worldwide impact and great inspiration by his work over the years. These papers were selected from invited lectures and contributed talks presented at the International Conference on Mathematical Fluid Mechanics held in Estoril, Portugal, May 21–25, 2007 and organized on the oc- sion of Professor Galdi’s 60th birthday. We express our gratitude to all the authors and reviewers for their important contributions...

This volume contains 18 invited papers by members and guests of the former Sonderforschungsbereich in Bonn (SFB 72) who, over the years, collaborated on the research group "Solution of PDE's and Calculus of Variations". The emphasis is on existence and regularity results, on special equations of mathematical physics and on scattering theory.

Variational Methods for Free Surface Interfaces

Vallombrosa Center was host during the week September 7-12, 1985 to about 40 mathematicians, physical scientists, and engineers, who share a common interest in free surface phenomena. This volume includes a selection of contributions by participants and also a few papers by interested scientists who were unable to attend in person. Although a proceedings volume cannot recapture entirely the stimulus of personal interaction that ultimately is the best justification for such a gathering, we do offer what we hope is a representative sampling of the contributions, indicating something of the varied and interrelated ways with which these classical but largely unsettled questions are currently bei...

On the Spectra of Quantum Groups

Joseph and Hodges-Levasseur (in the A case) described the spectra of all quantum function algebras on simple algebraic groups in terms of the centers of certain localizations of quotients of by torus invariant prime ideals, or equivalently in terms of orbits of finite groups. These centers were only known up to finite extensions. The author determines the centers explicitly under the general conditions that the deformation parameter is not a root of unity and without any restriction on the characteristic of the ground field. From it he deduces a more explicit description of all prime ideals of than the previously known ones and an explicit parametrization of .

Parabolic Problems

The volume originates from the 'Conference on Nonlinear Parabolic Problems' held in celebration of Herbert Amann's 70th birthday at the Banach Center in Bedlewo, Poland. It features a collection of peer-reviewed research papers by recognized experts highlighting recent advances in fields of Herbert Amann's interest such as nonlinear evolution equations, fluid dynamics, quasi-linear parabolic equations and systems, functional analysis, and more.

Combinatorial Floer Homology

The authors define combinatorial Floer homology of a transverse pair of noncontractible nonisotopic embedded loops in an oriented -manifold without boundary, prove that it is invariant under isotopy, and prove that it is isomorphic to the original Lagrangian Floer homology. Their proof uses a formula for the Viterbo-Maslov index for a smooth lune in a -manifold.

This volume is dedicated to the ideas of Stefan Hildebrant, whose doctrinal students include Bernd Schmidt and Klaus Stefan. His solution to the boundry regularity question for minimal surfaces bounded by a pescribed Jordan curve brought him world fame.
