Competition over the Nile watercourse is becoming a global crisis. As population growth, economic development, and urbanization increase the demand for water in the Nile Basin while climate change threatens its supply, the region faces a looming water crisis. An effective resolution of this multifaceted issue, which impacts 11 African countries, requires detailed multidisciplinary research. Until now the academic discourse regarding the Nile watercourse has been primarily dominated by monodisciplinary studies. This book fills that gap, providing a retrospective and prospective look at the Nile through multidisciplinary lenses—commingling history, hydro-politics, climate change, and law. It scrutinizes the legal and hydro-political trajectories of the Nile Basin, from the 4th century A.D. to 2022.

Management of Shared Groundwater Resources

Most of the world's freshwater resources in the liquid state (i.e. not in glaciers and polar caps) are underground. As the population grows and demand for water rises, reliance on groundwater increases. In many cases the groundwater underlies boundaries, or is part of a hydraulic system that crosses boundaries. In such cases there is always the danger that the 'prisoner's dilemma' will run its course and all parties will compete over who will pump the most water, ultimately destroying the storage potential to the detriment of future generations of all parties reliant on the groundwater. This book explores the options and means for averting this all too realistic scenario by managing these sh...

In The Eloquence of Truth, Ralph Wright, OSB uses poetry, prose and authoritative teaching to address such egregious issues as abortion, euthanasia, and slavery. Using these art forms, he make readers aware of Truth and how that truth affects our freedom in every day life. Truth alone, he stresses, can guarantee respect for the inalienable dignity and rights of each man, woman and child in our world - including the most defenseless of all human beings, the unborn child in the mother's womb. His main message in Eloquence is to show us the immeasurable value of each human being in the eyes of God, and he prays that fellow human beings will realize the truth about the 'almost divine dignity' of humankind, also realizing that this dignity subsists in us from the moment we are conceived.

The Scarcity of Water, Emerging Legal and Policy Responses

  • Categories: Law

The threat of water scarcity touches human populations and ecosystems worldwide. This work overviews the various legal responses to conflicts involving water as a resource. It addresses the continuous development of water law in the face of new water shortage scares. The distinguished team of contributors analyses the nature of the problem, international water law, legal and policy responses to water scarcity in selected regions, and the emergence of a new body of economic water law. Contributing experts in the field of water law and policy reveal the diverse and dynamic development of water law and the interaction between the legal and policy responses at the international, regional, and national levels. A result of the conference `Scarcity of Water, International, European and National Legal Aspects' held at the Faculty of Law of the Erasmus University, Rotterdam in October 1995, this book also contains a selection of papers presented at the conference.

In an ere as morally confused as ours, Stoner argues, we at least ought to know what we've abandoned or suppressed in the name of judicial activism and the modern rights-oriented Constitution. Having lost our way, perhaps the common law, in its original sense, provides a way back, a viable alternative to the debilitating relativism of our current age.
