This book reports on cutting-edge research and developments in manufacturing, giving a special emphasis to solutions fostering automation, sustainability and health, safety and well-being at work. Topics cover manufacturing process analysis and optimization, supply chain management, quality control, as well as human factors and logistics. They highlight the role and advantages of intelligent systems and technologies, discussing current best-practices and challenges to cope with in the near future. Based on proceedings of the 32nd edition of the International Conference on Flexible Automation and Intelligent Manufacturing, FAIM 2023, held on June 18–22, 2023, in Porto, Portugal, this second volume of a 2-volume set provides academics and professionals with extensive information on innovative strategies for industrial management in the era of industry 5.0.
This book covers a variety of topics in the field of mechanical engineering, with a special focus on methods and technologies for modeling, simulation, and design of mechanical systems. Based on a set of papers presented at the 1st International Conference “Innovation in Engineering”, ICIE, held in Guimarães, Portugal, on June 28–30, 2021, it focuses on innovation in mechanical engineering, spanning from engineering design and testing of medical devices, evaluation of new materials and composites for different industrial applications, fatigue and stress analysis of mechanical structures, and application of new tools such as 3D printing, CAE 3D models, and decision support systems. This book, which belongs to a three-volume set, provides engineering researchers and professionals with extensive and timely information on new technologies and developments in the field of mechanical engineering and materials.
This book reports research on policy and legal issues, anaerobic digestion of solid waste under processing aspects, industrial waste, application of GIS and LCA in waste management, and a couple of research papers relating to leachate and odour management.
This book is an assemblage of diverse yet homogenous research papers that bring together the issues and challenges of cultural heritage conservation and tourism sustainability. The richness of this book stems from its inclusion of diverse case studies from around the globe while scrutinizing the cases of both deterioration and sustainability of cultural heritage belonging to different eras. This book sheds light on the connections between culture as an essential dimension of local sustainability and cultural dimensions of sustainable tourism, further contributing to the complex discussion between culture and tourism. This book gives an overview of current research and subjects of discussion that focuses on cultural sustainable tourism through several sections, such as planning and management of sustainable tourism, sustainable cultural tourism development in a digital era, social and economic impacts of cultural tourism, and sustainable tourism development in urban areas
This book explores how tourism can drive positive change in our world. It explorers at the important connections between sustainability, tourism, and cultural preservation, showing how these elements interact and influence each other. By examining the effects of tourism on local communities and environments, it emphasizes that responsible tourism can truly be a force for good. This book features case studies from countries like Saudi Arabia, Portugal, and China. These examples illustrations show innovative approaches to support local communities while preserving their cultural heritage. Each case study offers a look at how tourism can help enhance social and economic development while also k...
This book gathers the proceedings of the I-ESA’20 Conference, which was organised by the National Engineering School of Tarbes (ENIT), on behalf of the European Virtual Laboratory, for Enterprise Interoperability (INTEROP-VLab) and the Pole Grand Sud-Ouest (PGSO) and was held virtually in Tarbes, France, in November 2020. It presents contributions ranging from academic research and case studies to industrial and administrative experiences with interoperability. These contributions show how, in a globalised market scenario—where the ability to cooperate with other organisations efficiently is essential in order to remain economically, socially and environmentally cost-effective—the most...
Modern science has given us the superpowers that have brought about the 'Anthropocene', but unfortunately not the wisdom to face its existential challenges. We cannot afford to dismiss potentially useful knowledge on mere ideological grounds without due assessment. Science and the Other is an in-depth exploration of what hinders us from engaging in cross-fertilising pluriversal dialogue. The book examines how scientific universalism naturalises the exploitation of both human and non-human nature. Other(-ed) knowledge practices are marginalised and excluded from scientific discourse on the presumption that they are incompatible with scientific evidence. However, an in-depth comparative analysis of the marginalised views and practices of the Brazilian Potiguara nation shows that their cosmology is not contradicted by scientific evidence, and hence a constructive dialogue should be possible. Furthermore, the use of radically different metaphors paints a different picture of 'reality', allowing onto-epistemic shifts and opening up new horizons towards alternative futures beyond the scope of modern/colonial metaphysics. This is an open access book.
