New Englishes
The spread, functions and models of the New Englishes have become a dominant theme of the eighties. This volume addresses, specifically, the English used in Singapore in the private and public domains, particularly the school system. The topics covered include: an overview of earlier studies and attempts at codification; a consideration of whether the formal mode of written Singapore English should be standardised; the problems of pronounciation; etc. and specific lexico-grammatical problems which have proved to be ambiguous for those not familiar with Singapore English. Also included in this volume is the largest bibliography so far published on Singapore English with over 700 titles listed, thus providing an essential tool for any future research.
Language Practices of Migrant Youth
This ground breaking research explores language maintenance and shift focusing on a school community. Following students’ language practice inside and outside of school, the author offers a full picture of students’ multilingual practices and their role in shaping identity. Using case studies of eight girls from Vietnamese and Cambodian backgrounds, the book draws on data from questionnaires, interviews and ethnographic observation to bring these language practices to life. It explores the place of heritage languages, English and other languages in the girls’ repertoires and investigates the role they see for these languages in their lives. A key focus of the book is the role of the school environment in shaping students’ repertoires and unfolding sense of ethnic identity; both directly through formal instruction and indirectly through its ethos and social composition. It provides practical suggestions on the basis of extensive research for how schools can negotiate some of the challenges of catering to a multiethnic population. The Joshua Salisbury Family Book of Remembrance
Joshua Salisbury (1827-1913) was the son of Thomas Salisbury and Sarah Jones of Llanasa, Flintshire, North Wales. He married (1) Martha Davies (d.1857) in 1850 at Llanassa. They became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1852. They emigrated to America and while living in Perry Co., Ill. she died. He married (2) Elizabeth Hoskin, daughter of James Hoskin and Elizabeth Hancock of Cornwall, England in 1858. They crossed the plains and settled at Wellsville located in Cache Valley, Utah in 1860. They raised a family of ten children. Several generations of descendants are given, along with information concerning their family's origins in Wales.
