Riemannian geometry is characterized, and research is oriented towards and shaped by concepts (geodesics, connections, curvature, ... ) and objectives, in particular to understand certain classes of (compact) Riemannian manifolds defined by curvature conditions (constant or positive or negative curvature, ... ). By way of contrast, geometric analysis is a perhaps somewhat less system atic collection of techniques, for solving extremal problems naturally arising in geometry and for investigating and characterizing their solutions. It turns out that the two fields complement each other very well; geometric analysis offers tools for solving difficult problems in geometry, and Riemannian geom et...
"Geometry and Physics" addresses mathematicians wanting to understand modern physics, and physicists wanting to learn geometry. It gives an introduction to modern quantum field theory and related areas of theoretical high-energy physics from the perspective of Riemannian geometry, and an introduction to modern geometry as needed and utilized in modern physics. Jürgen Jost, a well-known research mathematician and advanced textbook author, also develops important geometric concepts and methods that can be used for the structures of physics. In particular, he discusses the Lagrangians of the standard model and its supersymmetric extensions from a geometric perspective.
This book explores and demonstrates how geometric tools can be used in data analysis. Beginning with a systematic exposition of the mathematical prerequisites, covering topics ranging from category theory to algebraic topology, Riemannian geometry, operator theory and network analysis, it goes on to describe and analyze some of the most important machine learning techniques for dimension reduction, including the different types of manifold learning and kernel methods. It also develops a new notion of curvature of generalized metric spaces, based on the notion of hyperconvexity, which can be used for the topological representation of geometric information. In recent years there has been a fas...
This volume contains the proceedings of the third conference on Parametric Optimization and Related Topics, held in Gustrow from 30 August until 5 September, 1991. Parametric optimization, as a part of mathematical programming, investigates the behaviour of solutions to optimization problems under data pertubations. This behaviour, like continuity and differentiability, plays a fundamental role for a series of further questions that are of interest from a practical as well as a theoretical point of view. Many relations to other disciplines of operations research, like stochastic programming, modelbuilding, numerical methods, multiobjective optimization and optimal control, originate from this behaviour. The presented articles (all refereed) are topical and original papers reflecting recent results to current directions of research in theory and applications."
