This book will focus on analyzing the different aspects of Japan's representation in the novels of Haruki Murakami and David Mitchell. It is proven that Murakami creates and recreates Japan without implementing any orientalist features or exotic imagery. In the works of both authors, the intent to depict a new world of Japan stripped of traditional stereotypical traits becomes clear. The difference between Murakami and Mitchell's representation of Japan lies in the difference between Japan as seen by the Japanese and Japan as seen by modern Westerners, but both are 'correct' images of Japan. It is a recreation of the global image of Japan. In that sense, the texts of Murakami and Mitchell ar...

This volume brings together for the first time a significant body of Professor Barnes' scholarly writing on Japanese early state formation, brought together so that successive topics form a coherent overview of the problems and solutions of ancient Japan. The writings are, in some cases, the only studies of these topics available in English and they differ from the majority of other articles on the subject in being anthropological rather than cultural or historical in nature.

Despite a master narrative of cultural and racial homogeneity, Japan is home to diverse populations. In the face of systematic exclusions and marginalization, minority groups have consistently challenged the subordinate identities imposed by the Japanese majority. Japan's Minorities addresses a broad range of issues associated with the six principal minority groups in Japan: Ainu, Burakumin, Chinese, Koreans, Nikkeijin, and Okinawans. The contributors to this volume show how an overarching discourse of homogeneity has been deployed to exclude the historical experience of minority groups in Japan. The chapters provide clear historical introductions to particular groups and place their experiences in the context of contemporary Japanese society.

Biotechnology of Amino Acid Production

During the past few decades, microbiologists and biochemists have introduced molecular biology and genetic engineering to the field of applied and industrial microbiology. Amino acid fermentation is the practical result of biotechnology which integrates microbiology, biochemistry and chemical engineering. This volume discusses the general aspects of amino acid fermentation fundamental to industrial use. The microorganisms and their biosynthetic pathways and related enzymes are described in detail in order to clarify the regulatory mechanism of the microbial metabolism. In particular, the various amino acids are treated separately in individual chapters, including descriptions of the development of biochemical processes. The book covers general and specific aspects of microbiology research, past, present and future.
