Christian Modernism in an Age of Totalitarianism

Christian Modernism in an Age of Totalitarianism

With fascism on the march in Europe and a second World War looming, a group of Britain's leading intellectuals – including T.S. Eliot, Karl Mannheim, John Middleton Murry, J. H. Oldham and Michael Polanyi – gathered together to explore ways of revitalising a culture that seemed to have lost its way. The group called themselves 'the Moot'. Drawing on previously unpublished archival documents, this is the first in-depth study of the group's work, writings and ideas in the decade of its existence from 1938-1947. Christian Modernism in an Age of Totalitarianism explores the ways in which an important and influential strand of Modernist thought in the interwar years turned back to Christian ideas to offer a blueprint for the revitalisation of European culture. In this way the book challenges conceptions of Modernism as a secular movement and sheds new light on the culture of the late Modernist period.

In this remarkable volume covering diverse subjects, in a span of three decades, Kenneth R. Ross articulates his views on the meaning and practice of Christian mission and challenges the binary view of mission that prevailed before the 1950s. He further reflects on Scotland’s experiences in the world-wide Christian mission and demonstrates the centrality of Africa in any discourse on Christianity. This volume is invaluable in its argument for a rethinking of Christian mission especially in relation to the West, which is now a new frontier for Christian mission. The book will be immensely beneficial to students of missiology and general readers who are interested in the subject of Christian Mission.

On the Road to Freedom

This volume of essays brings together the work of scholars and activists from around the world as they reflect on the lives, theology, and witness of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Edith Stein, with a particular emphasis on freedom. The sacrificial faith and moral resistance of these two martyrs led them to resist oppressive evil and ultimately give up their lives in Nazi concentration camps. Engaging with the themes of discipleship, public theology, resistance in the context of suffering and injustice, the writers met in Wrocław, Poland – the birthplace of Bonhoeffer and Stein – in the looming shadow of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. They grappled with how the legacy of their struggle for freedom could continue to prophetically speak into modern-day contexts marred by tyranny and oppression. Offering rigorous academic depth and practical insights for Christian leaders and students, this timely work presents models of a cross-bearing faith in the face of social and political crises.

The Priority of Christ

The Priority of Christ

For a long time, Christians have tried to bridge the divide between Christianity and secular liberalism with philosophizing and theologizing. In The Priority of Christ, Father Robert Barron shows that the answer to this debate--and the way to move forward--lies in Jesus. Barron transcends the usual liberal/conservative or Protestant/Catholic divides with a postliberal Catholicism that brings the focus back on Jesus as revealed in the New Testament narratives. Barron's classical Catholic post-liberalism will be of interest to a broad audience including not only the academic community but also preachers and general readers interested in entering the dialogue between Catholicism and postliberalism.
