Jairus’s Daughter and the Female Body in Mark demonstrates that ubiquitous and significant depictions of children in the literature and material culture of the first century CE shaped the mindsets of the Gospel of Mark’s original audience. Through a detailed analysis of the story of Jairus’s daughter in Mark 5 and of the archaeological remains depicting female children, Janine E. Luttick reveals how ancient hearers of this story encountered an image of a female child that communicated ideas of hope to Jesus’s followers and in turn how readers today can understand the authority of Jesus, the domestic structures of early Christianity, and the suffering and loss experienced by some early Christians.

Dis/ability in Mark

The gospel of Mark purposefully employs characters with specific and nuanced representations of dis/ability to portray the unique authority, the engaging message, and the mission of the Markan Jesus. Based on hermeneutical insights from Dis/ability Studies, this monograph is a contribution to the research of culturally and historically normalized corporeality in the biblical scriptures. At the core of the investigation are the healing narratives: passages that explicitly deal with a transformation from a described deviant bodily state to a positively valued corporeality. Lena Nogossek-Raithel not only analyzes the terminological and historical descriptions of these physical phenomena but also investigates their narrative function for the gospel text. The author argues that the images of dis/ability employed are far from accidental. Rather, they significantly influence the narrative’s structure and impact, embody its theological claims, and characterize its protagonist Jesus. With this thorough exegetical analysis, Nogossek-Raithel offers a firm historical foundation for anyone interested in the critical interpretation and theological application of the Markan healing narratives.

Let Your Peace Come Upon it

Concerns about healing and peace remain central in human experience. They arise in many spheres of life: military, political, economic, medical, religious, spiritual, and domestic. Ancient writings from Greece and Rome, the Israelite-Jewish and Christian scriptures, extracanonical documents, and patristic texts are replete with instances where words and concepts for healing and peace occur together. After examining such occurrences, Father Ridgway undertakes an exegesis of the mission charge in Matthew 10:1-15 in order to define the precise meaning of «peace» (eirene) there and to demonstrate a relationship between the commissions to heal (therapeuein) the sick and to confer eirene on worthy houses. Father Ridgway concludes by discussing implications of his findings for peoples of antiquity and the modern world, both Christian and non-Christian.

Protestant Women Novelists and Irish Society 1879-1922

Reviews a great number of novels by Anglo-Irish women novelists that - with few exceptions - have attracted little attention from contemporary and modern literary critics. The main focus is on the literature and its society. The disposition of this study reflects the areas of contention experienced by the Anglo-Irish of the period. Chapter 1, Land and Politics, deals with the Anglo-Irish landlords and their families. Chapter 2 is devoted to different aspects of religion. Chapter 3, Race, discusses the Celt and his presumed characteristics. The 'other' race, the English, will get some attention, as will the Protestant Anglo-Irish themselves. Chapter 4 focuses on this new ruling class, 'the new Irish'. A brief conclusion follows.
