This title was first published in 2000: This book investigates the European Parliament’s stance vis-a-vis the 1990-1991 Gulf and 1991-1992 Yugoslav crises. In unveiling the parliamentary multi-faceted view of these events, reference has been made to the positions taken by constituent political groups and their voting behaviour. In particular, the following questions have been addressed: has the European Parliament sought to define and shape a common foreign policy with respect to the above crises? What specific functions have the European Parliament political groups performed? Have political groups succeeded in achieving an internal cohesion? Has the European Parliament overcome divisions among its members through the formation of party coalitions? despite the considerable flow of published material on external relations of the European Union and the European Parliament, virtually no study has explored in-depth the links between these two areas. The purpose of this book is to fill the gap in the existing literature, breaking new ground by combining a qualitative and qualitative analysis of parliamentary behaviour with foreign policy.
Examining the care of older people from a holistic viewpoint, Ruth Bright argues that all of geriatric care is, or should be, intended to improve the overall quality of life for older people. To that end the book discusses the many different challenges that an older person might face.
First published in 1997, this volume provides a data-rich analysis of the party groups in the European Parliament. Their internal organisation, cohesion and coalition behaviour are examined. The main argument is that their internal organisation is a crucial factor in explaining the behaviour of EP party groups. Roll-call analysis is used to measure group cohesion and coalition behaviour. The concept of representation in the transnational EP is studied by a content analysis of members’ written questions. The concluding section sets the work into a broader context by discussing the future of Europarties.
Anyone surveying physiological and pharmacological journals can readily see that the biological actions of calcium ion are of increasingly widespread current interest. The scope of investi gated actions and reactions in which a role for calcium ion is of some importance is so numerous as to convey the impression that calcium ion is everywhere and interacts with everything. This being so, the challenge in contemporary research is to focus on investigation of those actions of calcium ion which, in some manner, influence either significant physiological parameters or the manner in which pharmacological agents act. This multi-authored book originated from a more limited Symposium on "Importance ...
