The Oregon Convention Center, Portland, Oregon, was the venue for the 1997 Cryogenic Engineering Conference. The meeting was held jointly with the International Cryogenic Materials Conference. John Barclay, of the University of Victoria, and David Smathers, of Cabot Performance Materials, were conference chairmen. Portland is the home of Northwest Natural Gas, a pioneer in the use of liquid natural gas, and Portland State University, where cryogenic research has long been conducted. The program consisted of 350 CEC papers, considerable more than CEC-95. This was the largest number of papers ever submitted to the CEC. Of these, 263 papers are published here, in Volume 43 of Advances in Cryoge...

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is changing everything - from the way we relate to each other, to the work we do, the way our economies work, and what it means to be human. We cannot let the brave new world that technology is currently creating simply emerge. All of us need to help shape the future we want to live in. But what do we need to know and do to achieve this? In Shaping the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Klaus Schwab explores how people from all backgrounds and sectors can influence the way that technology transforms our world. Drawing on contributions by more than 200 of the world's leading technology, economic and sociological experts to present a practical guide for citizens, bu...
Frosting and Icing for Efficient Energy Use in Engineering Applications provides a compendium of innovative case studies for mitigating impacts from frosting and icing on energy. This book first clarifies the mechanisms of frosting and icing, outlining modeling options, and control techniques. Next, a series of experimental examples show the effects of frosting at different scales of energy production, from ambient air vaporizers to wind turbines, and demonstrate how to control these for maximum efficiency. Finally, the mechanisms and mitigation of frosting are examined in a variety of infrastructure scenarios, including sustainable food storage and efficient high-speed railways.Combining th...
