傳教士筆下的大陸與臺灣
傳教士入華以來，不但出版各種書刊、單張來宣教，同時還將其所見所聞以及所從事的宣教工作，以報告或書信的方式回報西方。傳教士的書寫在幾十年前即為西方史學界在研究近代中國與中西交流的一項重要史料。? 「傳教士書寫」固然有其公正與客觀的特質，但是也有若干主觀因素存在於寫作之中。例如傳教士的心態容易受到「神學」以及「宗派立場」的影響，同時也很容易將「期望」與「想像」寫入作品之中。所以他們的作品未必是「當代」或「寫實」的中國情況，而可能是在「代言」或「建立」一個新的情境或是對未來的寄望。? 此次「傳教士筆下的大陸與臺灣」國際學術研討會之舉辦，有美、英、日、中、港、臺的學者參與，其中許多位是教會史的著名學者。本書的十四篇論文猶如鑽石的不同切面，各自綻放著耀眼的光芒，但是在整體上又能夠巧妙的呈現出「傳教士書寫」的豐富性與重要性。相信經過這樣的呈現，能對學術界產生足夠的貢獻與影響。
