Micro and Nanostructured Epoxy / Rubber Blends

Epoxy resins are polymers which are extensively used as coating materials due to their outstanding mechanical properties and good handling characteristics. A disadvantage results from their high cross-link density: they are brittle and have very low resistance to crack growth and propagation. This necessitates the toughening of the epoxy matrix without impairing its good thermomechanical properties. The final properties of the polymer depend on their structure. The book focuses on the microstructural aspects in the modification of epoxy resins with low molecular weight liquid rubbers, one of the prime toughening agents commonly employed. The book follows thoroughly the reactions of elastomer-modified epoxy resins from their liquid stage to the network formation. It gives an in-depth view into the cure reaction, phase separation and the simultaneous development of the morphology. Chapters on ageing, failure analysis and life cycle analysis round out the book.

Materials and Failures in MEMS and NEMS

The fabrication of MEMS has been predominately achieved by etching the polysilicon material. However, new materials are in large demands that could overcome the hurdles in fabrication or manufacturing process. Although, an enormous amount of work being accomplished in the area, most of the information is treated as confidential or privileged. It is extremely hard to find the meaningful information for the new or related developments. This book is collection of chapters written by experts in MEMS and NEMS technology. Chapters are contributed on the development of new MEMS and NEMS materials as well as on the properties of these devices. Important properties such as residual stresses and buckl...

Proceedings of the Materials Forum 2007

The U.S. industrial complex and its associated infrastructure are essential to the nation's quality of life, its industrial productivity, international competitiveness, and security. Each component of the infrastructure-such as highways, airports, water supply, waste treatment, energy supply, and power generation-represents a complex system requiring significant investment. Within that infrastructure both the private and government sectors have equipment and facilities that are subject to degradation by corrosion, which significantly reduces the lifetime, reliability, and functionality of structures and equipment, while also threatening human safety. The direct costs of corrosion to the U.S....

Toughened plastics are widely used in many diverse industries and form the basis for engineering plastics, structural adhesives, and matrices for fiber-composite materials. This volume was developed from a symposium and a workshop at the 200th National Meeting of the ACS, Division of Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering, Washington, D.C., August 1990. Various contributions discuss aspects of the toughening of plastics such as the basic chemistry involved, the microstructure of the materials, the resulting mechanical properties, and applications of the toughened plastics. This ACS symposium book is focused on polymer synthesis, materials development, advanced applications for coatings and techniques for measuring a coatings performance in various environments. This book addresses current coating technologies geared for an organic-polymer chemist and chemical engineers perspective. The book would add to an academic, industrial or government laboratory inventory of coatings books.
