Sophy Martin is an orphan who learned well to watch out for her own interests. She makes herself useful to her old uncle and attractive as well by arranging her hair and clothing so she reminds him of his long missing son, Cornelius. After Mr. Thorp's death, his will makes Sophy Mr Thorp's sole heir, displacing many closer relatives. While in power, Sophy lives a comfortable life, eating special food in her own private apartment and thinking about marriage to a wealthy neighbor. Cornelius Thorp appears, however, and claims his estate but Sophy manages to marry one of her admirers and to obtain a legacy of £300 for life from the Thorpe estate.
