Improving Religious Education Through Teacher Training

This book brings together two topics which have both been of increasing interest in different countries. The first refers to the quality of Religious Education as a school subject (RE) in general, the second is about the education of teachers of RE and its possible contribution to better quality RE. There have been many public, and often controversial, debates concerning both of these topics. The chapters contained in this volume, however, are not meant to continue such debates (even if it is inevitable that they will contribute to these debates as well), but to make use of research, especially research on teacher education in the field of RE, in order to provide insights based not just on political or personal opinions, but on rigorous academic scholarship.

The focus is on research-based perspectives, with contributions from several internationally renowned scholars on what constitutes good and quality in teaching-studying-learning processes. In recent decades, and around the world, much attention has been given to the role of spirituality in the education of children and young people. While educationalists share many common goals and values in nurturing the spiritual lives of children and young people, national and regional cultures, religions and politics have impacted on the approaches scholars and practitioners have adopted in their investigations and practices. The different contexts across nations and regions mean that educators face quite distinct conditions in which to frame their approaches to spiritual education and research, and the nature and impact of these differences is not yet understood. This book brings together...

Religious Education in a Post-Secular Age

This book analyzes the changes and shifts in religious education in Europe over the past 50 years. In a post-secular age, it has become increasingly difficult to make sharp distinctions between what is religious and non-religious, confessional and non-confessional. Reforms in religious education in Sweden in the 1960s appeared as part of a process of wider secular liberalization, giving more credence to the idea of absolute neutrality in religious education. However drastic shifts in society, culture and the European religious landscape raise the need for a reevaluation of the foundations of religious education. Drawing on a range of case studies from across Europe, this book will appeal to students and scholars of religious education as well as post-secular education more generally.

Religion, Learning, Literacy

This volume examines critically the acquisition of religious knowledge and skills, arguing that religious literacy—like other foundational competencies—should be developed within public education. Despite its importance, this subject has been largely overlooked in educational research and policy. Bringing together 18 contributions from leading scholars, this book explores theoretical frameworks and conceptual models for teaching religious literacy in diverse classroom settings. The chapters analyze how religious knowledge is acquired, the role of education in fostering informed engagement with religion, and the implications for curriculum design and policy. Addressing both conceptual and practical dimensions, the volume highlights the complexities of teaching and learning about religion in secular education systems. This book is an essential resource for scholars of religious studies and theology, education researchers, policymakers, and educators seeking to understand the evolving role of religious literacy in contemporary public education.
