Noise, Oscillators and Algebraic Randomness

Noise is ubiquitous in nature and in man-made systems. Noise in oscillators perturbs high-technology devices such as time standards or digital communication systems. The understanding of its algebraic structure is thus of vital importance. The book addresses both the measurement methods and the understanding of quantum, 1/f and phase noise in systems such as electronic amplifiers, oscillators and receivers, trapped ions, cosmic ray showers and in commercial applications. A strong link between 1/f noise and number theory is emphasized. The twenty papers in the book are comprehensive versions of talks presented at a school in Chapelle des Bois (Jura, France) held from April 6 to 10, 1999, by engineers, physisicts and mathematicians.

Noise In Physical Systems And 1/f Fluctuations - Proceedings Of The 14th International Conference

The recent conferences in this series were organised in Montreal (1987), Budapest (1989), Kyoto (1991), St Louis (1993) and Palanga (1995). The aim of the conference was to bring together specialists in fluctuation phenomena from different fields and to make a bridge between theoretical scientists and more applied or engineering oriented researchers. Therefore a broad variety of topics covering the fundamental aspects of noise and fluctuations as well as applications in various fields are addressed. Noise in materials, components, circuits and electronic, biological and other physical systems are discussed.

Apple of Discord

When seeking the origins of World War I, the chain of events in the late nineteenth century that led to the breakdown of relations between Austria-Hungary and Serbia and facilitated the rise of an aggressive Serbian nationalism needs to be understood. This book focuses on the hitherto unexplored Hungarian influence on the Habsburg Monarchy's policy toward Serbia after the 1867 Ausgleich, and it argues that this early period was critical in shaping policy after 1871, down to the imposition on Serbia in 1881 of a system of economic and political control. The Ausgleich, the Austro-Hungarian compromise that reconstituted the Empire as a dual monarchy, gave Hungary a limited voice in foreign affai...

Paul as a Prototype and Entrepreneur of Christian Identity

In this important addition to Pauline scholarship on 1 Corinthians, Dr. Vuyani Stanley Sindo brings fresh insight to how Paul’s use of the “in Christ” terminology supports his argument on leadership and community. Integrating social identity theory with a socio-historical approach, Dr. Sindo examines how identity discourse is an integral part of the leadership discourse in 1 Corinthians 1–4. From this solid base he provides a close and insightful investigation of the interrelationship between leadership and identity. This compelling and biblically rooted work will help Christians to understand the dangers of division within the church and how Christian leaders can overcome these divisions by reminding the community of their common identity in Christ.
