Molecular mechanisms for reprogramming hippocampal development and function by early-life stress
The early postnatal period is a crucial stage for hippocampal development. During this critical period, the neonatal hippocampus is highly sensitive to the detrimental consequences of adverse environmental factors. Extensive clinical and preclinical evidence has shown that traumatic events early in life have profound and persistent effects on hippocampal function and behavior. This research topic focuses on the acute and lasting effects of early-life stress on various developmental processes in the hippocampus, and aims to uncover the molecules that are responsible for early-life stress-programmed effects and underlie resilience or vulnerability to stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders later in life. We hope the articles in this research topic will provide novel insights and stimulate future studies on the mechanisms of early-life stress and brain development.

This Research Topic covers some of the latest research on brain and behavior in health and disease in Africa. With its untapped resources and unique situations, “Neuroscience in Africa” has the potential to contribute to a better understanding of human brain function both in health and disease. The diverse African fauna display a range of specializations in brain structure/function relationships as a result of adaptations to the environment. Exploration of these may lead to insights into coping strategies which could be extrapolated to humans. Africa’s unique flora is being investigated for anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, antioxidant, antiepileptogenic and neuroprotective properties to determine its potential for use in the treatment of human brain disorders. There is also research on neurodegenerative and infectious diseases, not only common to the global world, but also neglected tropical diseases and conditions which provide unique avenues of investigations in basic and translational neuroscience on highly debilitating disorders - and on the effects of pathogens and environmental toxins.
Advanced Initiatives in Interprofessional Education in Japan
Interprofessional education (IPE) is becoming a recognized discipline among health care professionals and medical training institutions worldwide. Its significance is especially felt in Japan, where little has been written on the subject although the need is great. Recent initiatives among several institutions have helped to create the Japan Interprofessional Working and Education Network (JIPWEN), comprising ten universities. Through consultation and cooperation with the World Health Organization, other international networks, and local health policy planners, JIPWEN focuses on critical issues and applicable models to assist institutions interested in setting up IPE programs. With contributions from the ten JIPWEN member universities, this book explains in detail the diverse contents of existing IPE programs and provides viable models for the increasing number of institutions aiming to develop their own IPE programs. The chapters that make up the book depict the member institutions' backgrounds, goals, methods, modules, student compositions, facilitation systems, and curricula, providing an invaluable description of IPE initiatives currently under way in Japan.
