The presence of contaminant flavonoids in vitamin C preparations from citrus fruits initially led Szent-Gyorgyi and his collaborators to suggest that a flavonoid compound, with biological activity for the prevention of capillary fragility, was vitamin P. The Quest for the Phoenix
The author presents with this intellectual biography of the Lutheran alchemist Count Michael Maier an academic study of western esotericism in general and to the study of alchemy and rosicrucianism in particular. The author charts the development of Maier's Hermetic worldview in the context of his service at the courts of Emperor Rudolf II and Moritz of Hessen-Kassel. The problem of the nature of early Rosicrucianism is addressed in detail with reference to Maier's role in the promotion of this "serious jest" in the years immediately prior to the outbreak of the Thirty Years' War. The work is set in the context of ongoing debates concerning the nature of early modern alchemy and its role in the history of Western esotericism.

Plant Pigments, Flavors and Textures: The Chemistry and Biochemistry of Selected Compounds focuses on the chemistry and biochemistry of compounds responsible for the pigments, flavors, and textures of some fruits and vegetables. Since much of the information presented is scattered in the scientific literature, an attempt has been made to integrate the material into a concise yet comprehensive text. The book is organized into three sections that deal separately with pigments, flavors, and textures. Section I discusses pigment degradation during processing and storage as well as attempts to prevent color deterioration. Section II examines the biogenesis of several groups of compounds that contribute to flavor. Section III deals with the chemistry and biochemistry of plant cell wall components and their relation to texture. This book will be useful to food scientists as well as those interested in foods. The extensive references cited in the text will enable the reader to pursue any of the topics discussed, in more depth.

Deconstructing Dinosaurs
Deconstructing Dinosaurs takes a fresh look at the history of the German Tendaguru Expedition (1909–1913), using recently uncovered sources to reveal how Berlin’s Natural History Museum appropriated and extracted 225 tonnes of dinosaur fossils from land belonging to modern-day Tanzania. It examines the colonial conditions under which the area’s inhabitants located, excavated, and prepared the finds and carried them out of the country’s interior to the coast. Once in Berlin, the fossils were transformed into valuable scientific assets and prize exhibits, foremost among them Giraffatitan brancai. This specimen, a prominent subject of provenance and restitution debates, is used to explore the colonial legacy of natural history collections and the social and political responsibilities of the museums that hold them.
