Song, Prayer, Scripture

Experts from the field of biblical studies shed light on the many ways in which the Psalter psalms have been used through the ages. The focus across the volume is on the role that these psalms play in scribal, liturgical, didactic, iconographic, and literary contexts. The book is structured in four parts, covering different styles/uses of the Psalms. In part I (song) the focus in on psalms as songs, and how their uses in different performative settings have generated new interpretations. In part II (prayer) the focus is on the liturgical uses of psalms, not only how they can be used as prayers in various communities of faith but also on how they may not be used. In part III (scripture: interpretation) the focus in on the reception of several individual psalms in Jewish, Christian, and Muslim traditions. Finally, in part IV (scripture: manuscripts) the focus is on scribal activity: transmission, translation, and illumination.

Civic Longing

No Constitutional definition of citizenship existed until the 14th Amendment in 1868. Carrie Hyde looks at the period between the Revolution and the Civil War when the cultural and juridical meaning of citizenship was still up for grabs. She recovers numerous speculative traditions that made and remade citizenship’s meaning in this early period.

Charles Hodge

Most scholars of Reformed orthodoxy devote little attention to the nineteenth century, and most students of nineteenth century Reformed thought bypass the influence of Reformed orthodox ideas on their subjects. Aligning himself with Reformed theology in nineteenth century America, Charles Hodge's writings are an ideal place to bring such studies together. Hodge's American context and Reformed identity illustrate the persistence and change of Reformed ideas in a post-Enlightenment context. Encompassing philosophy, science, and theology, Ryan M. McGraw traces the development of Hodge's ideas with an eye both to Reformed orthodoxy and to American thought.

God, Man, and Hollywood

It takes no great powers of observation to see that Hollywood has long been far to the left of the general American public. Even in stories that have no overt political content, the social and moral assumptions in films rated from GP to R are often at odds with the deeply held values of most of the viewing audience. But that's not the whole story, argues the literary and cultural critic Mark Royden Winchell in God, Man, and Hollywood. A surprising number of films articulate culturally unfashionable attitudes--and it is from these movies that we learn the most about our society and ourselves. Beginning with D. W. Griffith's The Birth of a Nation and ending with Mel Gibson's The Passion of the...
