Family
Adrian Wilson provides a comprehensive introduction to the study of the family. The book opens with a chapter on family structure, looking at the family historically and in cross-cultural perspective. Following this is a review first of theoretical approaches to the family, including functionalist, feminist, Marxist and radical criticism, and second, how the family is studied sociologically. Chapters 4 and 5 look at the changing British family and British families today, and the concluding chapters examine family problems, for example, divorce, violence, one -parent families, and the family and the state.

Churchill in North America, 1929
Churchill took a three-month vacation to North America in the summer and fall of 1929, a little known event in his long career. In the company of his son Randolph, his brother Jack and his nephew Johnny, he toured Canada and the United States. Notable are Churchill's meetings with political, business, newspaper and entertainment figures (President Hoover, Prime Minister Mackenzie King, Bernard Baruch, William Randolph Hearst, Marion Davies and Charlie Chaplin) as well as his visits to such landmarks as the Grand Canyon, Lake Louise, Niagara Falls and Yosemite. The Churchills also visited a lumber camp, slaughterhouse and steel factory, went fishing on the Pacific Ocean and inspected the battlefields in Quebec and Virginia. They evaded Prohibition and gambled on the stock market (about to crash). It was on this trip that Churchill gained an understanding of the two countries firsthand and deepened his feelings for Canada and the United States.
The Ancestors of Lieutenant Thomas Tracy of Norwich, Connecticut
Thomas Tracy (1610-1685) emigrated in 1636 from England to Salem, Massachusetts, and moved to Wethersfield, Connecticut in 1637. In 1642 he married Mary, the widow of Edward Mason, and moved to Saybrook, Connecticut. They had seven children. In 1660 he moved to Norwich, Connecticut, from where he was active in local and colonial government. His father was Sir Paul Tracy of Stanway, Gloucester County, England, and this book traces the ancestry of Thomas and his father in England, France and elsewhere to 1066 A.D. and earlier to the ninth century.
